Water required to meet the demand of evapo-

transpiration and metabolic activities of the crop
together is known as consumptive use of water.
It is expressed in terms of depth of water, it varies
with temperature, humidity, wind speed,
topography, sunlight hour, method of irrigation,
moisture availability.
Mathematically, CU= evapotranspiration=
evaporation + transpiration .
Climatic Crop

Factors affecting Consumptive

use of Water

Soil Management
Radiation
Temperature
Humidity
Wind Velocity
Rainfall
No. and size of
stomata
Opening and
closing of stomata
Rooting depth and
pattern
Stages of Growth
Water holding
capacity
Infiltration rate
Soil water depth
Time of sowing
Fertilizer application
Mulching
1. Daily consumptive use – Total amount of
water used in ET and Metabolic activities by
crop during a single day.
 Expressed in: mm/day or cm/day
2. Seasonal Consumptive use - Total
amount of water used in ET and Metabolic
activities by crop during it’s total growing
season.
Expressed in: mm/season or cm/season
3. Peak period of consumptive use – The
average daily water use rate in terms of
ET & metabolic activities during highest
CU period of season.
