Each carbon filament is produced

from a precursor polymer. The

precursor polymer is commonly
rayon, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) Or a
derivative petroleum resin.

For synthetic polymers such as

rayon or PAN, the precursor is first
spun filaments by chemical and
mechanical processes to align the
atoms polymer to improve late
obtained carbon fiber physical
properties.

fiber composite and epoxy resin. Matéria (Rio de Janeiro), 23(2).
The polymer fibers are heated to remove the atoms other than carbon (carbonization),
producing carbon fiber end.

The carbon fibers can be treated to improve handling qualities, they are then wound into coils.
A common method of manufacture involves heating the
PAN filaments in an atmosphere of air (oxidation) to about
300 °C, breaking many of the hydrogen bonds and oxidized
matter. Oxidized PAN is placed in a furnace having an inert
atmosphere of a gas and heated to about 2000 °C, which
induces graphitization of the material, changing the links
of the molecular structure.

When heated under appropriate conditions, these

chains are attached to one side of the other, forming
narrow graphene sheets that eventually coalesce to
form a single cylindrical filament.
