3D Printing

A Manufacturing Revolution
What is 3D Printing

• 3D Printing is a process for making a

physical object from a three-dimensional
digital model, typically by laying down
many successive thin layers of a material.
Manufacturing Processes

Subtractive manufacturing is a process by which 3D

objects are constructed by successively cutting material
away from a solid block of material.

Additive Manufacturing/3D
printing is a process by which 3D
objects are constructed by
successively depositing material
in layers such that it becomes a
predesigned shape
Applications and Benefits
3D Printing Methods

• Stereo lithography (SL) – SL is a laser-based process

that works with photopolymer resins, that react
with the laser and cure to form a solid

• Digital Light Processing(DLP) —DLP uses a more

conventional light source, such as an arc lamp or a
deformable mirror device (DMD), which is applied
to the entire surface of the photopolymer resin in
a single pass
3D Printing Methods
Selective Laser sintering(SLS) – Refer to a laser based
3D printing process that works with powdered
materials. As the laser interacts with the surface of the
powdered material it sinters, or fuses, the particles to
each other forming a solid.

Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) – The process works

by melting plastic filament that is deposited, via a
heated extruder, a layer at a time, onto a build
platform according to the 3D data supplied to the
printer. Each layer hardens as it is deposited and bonds
to the previous layer

Vacuum/ Thermoforming

Vacuum forming is the process where a sheet of plastic is heated to

a forming temperature, stretched onto a single-surface mold, and
forced against the mold by a vacuum. This process can be used
to form plastic into permanent objects.
