CHAPTER 7:

Communication for
Various Purposes
People communicate to generally obtain, provide, and disseminate
information; to express their arguments to persuade others; or to
entertain their audiences.
Lesson 1. Types of Speech
What is SPEECH?
 Speech is defined as the sounds that individuals use to build up words,
producing sounds accurately in the right places.
 It is coupled with appropriate expression, clear voice, suitable pitch,
volume, and intonation to support the meaning of the statement being
conveyed.

The uses of the Basic Types of Speech

• To inform
• To instruct
• To persuade
• To entertain
TYPES OF SPEECHES
A. According to Purpose
1. Informative speech – This type of speech is like teaching
because it tries to impart something to the listeners. To
sustain the interest of the audience, the informative speaker
provides a clear heading on the speech development, a
summary of the points in the speech and a concluding
statement.
The primary purpose of the Informative speech is;
* To impart knowledge
* To clarify information
* To secure understanding
Examples of Informative speech

 A tour guide informing the tourists about the San Juanico


Bridge
 A professor telling students how to be prepared during a
natural calamity
 A student researcher telling the community about the
result of his/her research
2. Demonstrative Speech – This has many similarities with an
informative speech. A demonstrative speech also teaches you
something. The main difference lies in including a demonstration
of how to do the thing you are teaching.
Examples of Demonstrative speech
 How to use photoshop.
 How to make lasagna.
 How to write a speech.
 How to make a baby… doll.
3. Persuasive Speech – This type of speech contains information
to convince the audience to change in the way they think, or
do something or to start doing something that they are not
currently doing. The persuasive speech is successful if the
speech pushes the audience to willingly make the change as
suggested.

Persuasion - is the process of creating, reinforcing, or changing


peoples beliefs or actions through arguments.
Arguments – consist of propositions and their justifications.

Evidences are of three (3) types:


1. Logical
2. Emotional
3. Personal
Examples of Persuasive speech

 An environmentalist persuading the students to plant


more trees
 A salesman trying to persuade customers to buy a new
product
 A doctor persuading a patient to stop smoking
4. Entertainment speech –This speech has the nature to
transmit a feeling of pleasure, as well as goodwill to the
audience or listeners. The speakers using this approach should
be gracious, genial, good-natured, as well as relax with their
audience.

The Sole Purpose of this speech This is through;


during the presentation is;
 Funny stories
 To let the audience ENJOY  Jokes
 To let the audience SMILE  Scary story and song
 To let the audience RELAX  Dramatize an anecdote
 To let the audience LAUGH
Examples of Entertainment speech

 A guest speaker telling his audience about his past


experience
 A pastor dramatizing a story to the congregation for his
pastoral message
 A politician singing a song to the constituents at the
middle of his speech
SOME OTHER TYPES OF SPEECHES
1. Layout Speech – This speech tends to be less formal given to
individuals or smaller groups. The speech may contain giving
directions, explaining the location of a place, or describing
where things are.
EXAMPLES:
a. An interior designer explaining the floor plan of a large art
museum.
b. An engineer explaining the blueprint of a new house
c. A computer programmer describing how to create a software
application
2. Argumentation Speech – This speech has the purpose to
encourage the audience to change their views or opinions. It
can be done using the force of logical interference and sound
reasoning. The argumentation speech further aims to persuade
the audience to be able to assert the plausibility of a
debatable question on the speaker side.
EXAMPLES:
a. A politician sharing his argument on how to protect the
environment
b. A student leader presenting his platform to the school
administrator
c. A campus administrator encouraging the entire studentry to
observe proper waste management
3. Evocative Speech – This type of speech embodies
characteristics, such as geniality, enthusiasm, modesty, and
tolerance.
Examples of Evocative speech
 Inspirational Figure - heroes from history and the present
 Generational Address - address your generation in motivational
terms
 Eulogy - funeral to praise and honor someone’s life
 Personal Triumph – challenges in your life
