LISTENING TO

EXTRACT SPECIFIC
INFORMATION
Sometimes we need to use
specific listening strategies to
help us understand the message.
This is called having a reason for
listening.
Can you think of some
situation where you need to listen
carefully to the message so that
you can collect accurate
information?
Sample Activity:
For each of the following situation, listen
carefully to the listening text and write down
the important information.

a. You are inviting some friends for a BBQ

meal tonight, but are not sure if the weather
will be good enough to eat outside. Listen to
the weather forecast and decide if you can go
ahead with your plans.
b. You want to go shopping. The shops are
quite far away, but you can walk there.
Listen to the weather forecast and decide if
you should take the bus or walk.

How did you manage to get the

information needed? Talk with your group
about how you listened for details.
 The objective of the activity is to practice
listening for specific information about the
weather. However , before beginning the task,
students are asked to discuss when these
listening skills might be used. Students are
also asked, as a pre-listening task, to think of
situations where they need to understand
specific information.
WEATHER FORECAST:
This example is an exercise in listening to
extract specific information at its most
simple and direct. Students are told that
they are going to listen to a weather
forecast.
 Listen and note the weather words and
temperatures you hear.
TODAY’S WEATHER:
cold cool dry raining drizzle

TEMPEARTURE(‘C)
