DESTRUCTIVE FISHING
METHOD & OVERUSE
OF CHEMICALS:
PESTICIDES &
FERTILIZERS
DYNAMITE FISHING, MURO-AMI,CYANIDE
FISHING, AND THE USE OF NETS WITH SMALL
MESHES ARE SERIOUSLY DETRIMENTAL TO
THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE FISHING
INDUSTRY. THEY CAUSE OVERFISHING,
WHICH INLCLUDES IMMATURE FISH, AND, AT
THE SAME TIME, DAMAGE FISHING HABITATS.
THE INTRODUCTION OF THESE
DESTRUCTIVE FISHING METHODS HAS
DETERIORATED FISHING CONDITIONS.
DAMAGE TO THE CORAL REEF HABITAT IS
NOW EXTENSIVE THROUGHOUT THE
PHILIPPINES LOWERING THE AMOUNT OF
FISH STOCKS IN THE MARKET.
 DYNAMITE FISHING- Dynamite fishing or blast fishing is
the use of Bombs to kill or hurt lots of fish at once. This makes the fish
easier to catch. It is bad because it can kill lots of fish and damage
where they live. It can also hurt the people fishing. It is illegal in a lot of
places.
 MURO-AMI- The muro-ami fishing technique, employed on coral
reefs in southeast asia, uses an encircling net together with pounding
devices. These devices usually comprise large stones fitted on ropes
that are pounded into the coral reefs. They can also consist of large
heavy blocks of cement that are suspended above the sea by a crane
fitted to the vessel. The pounding devices are repeatedly and violently
lowered into the area encircled by the net, literally smashing the coral
in that area into small fragments in order to scare the fish out of their
coral refuges. The "crushing" effect of the pounding process on the
coral heads has been described as having longlasting
and practically totally destructive effect.
 CYANIDE FISHING-
is a method of collecting live fish mainly for use
in aquariums, which involves spraying sodium
cyanide mixture into the desired fish's habitat in order to stun
the fish. The practice hurts not only the target population, but
also many other marine organisms, including coral and thus
coral reefs.
OVERUSE OF FERTILIZERS AND
PESTICIDES IN AGRICULTURE
DESTROYS ORGANISMS AND THE
NUTRIENT CYCLE. OVERCULTIVATION
OF LANDS CAUSES DECLINING SOIL
FERTILITY, LEADING TO FALLING TOP
YIELDS. OVERUSE LEADS TO THE
CRUSTING OF EXPOSED TOPSOIL BY
RAIN AND SUN THAT INCREASES
RUNOFF, WATER EROSION, AND
GULLYING. SOIL DRYING PROMOTES
WIND EROSION AND ENCROACHMENT
ON A RABLE TABLE.
 WATER EROSION-Water erosion is the detachment
and removal of soil material by water. The process may be
natural or accelerated by human activity. The rate of erosion
may be very slow to very rapid , depending on the soil, the
local landscape, and weather conditions.
 GULLYING- is a landform created by running water
 WIND EROSION-Wind erosion is a major
geormophological force, especially in arid and semi-arid regions.
