Science Process Skills

• There are six basic science process skills:

• Observation
• Classification
• Communication
• Measurement All the six basic skills are
• Inference important individually as
well as when they are
• Prediction integrated together.
Observing

To use the five senses to learn about an object or event, or to collect

information about an object.

Examples:
• The learner will be blind folded and make observations
using the sense of touch.
• The learner will create observations about a coin using
the 5 senses.
• The learner will mix primary colors to create more colors.
Classifying

To place an object or event in groups based on common characteristic.

Examples:
• The learner will use a magnet to classify objects as
magnetic or nonmagnetic.
• The learner will use a balance and sort objects according to
mass.
• The learner will combine different liquids with water to
determine which is more or less.
Measuring
• To determine the length area, volume, mass or temperature to
describe and quantify objects.

Examples:
• The learner will find the mass of different liquids
that have the same volume.
• The learner will use technology to find the speed of
a toy truck.
• The learner will measure the distance a marble
travels.
Communicating
• To describe an object or event to another
person.
Examples:
• The learner will create a line graph showing the relationship between speed and the
mass of a marble.
• The learner will discuss possible errors with other classmates.

This can be done with graphs, diagrams, maps, and spoken

word.
Inferring and Predicting

• To guess or draw a conclusion about an object or future event

based on observation.

Examples for inferring : Examples for predicting:

• The learner will write a • The learner will predict what is
conclusion at the end of each a box based on observations
investigation. using the sense of touch.
• The learner will create • The learner will write a
inferences about observations hypothesis about the effect of
they made about a mystery increasing the salt on the
object. I infer it is solid rather buoyancy of an egg
than hollow.
Controlling variables: to study how attributes
vary by manipulating variables.

Experimenting: to put all the process skills

together in one activity.

Representing data: to organize your

measurement to make your information easier to
use and interpret.
