Modern Nationalism

 Is a looser form of 20th century music


development focused on nationalist composers
and musical innovators who sought to combine
modern techniques with folk materials.

 Russian composer and a
scientist,
 He had a strong lyric vein
but also was noted for his
handling of heroic subject
 Died on February 27,
1887 at the age of 53 .
Cesar Cui
Cesar Cui

 Born on January 18,1935


 Belonged to the group Russian Five.
 Before he became a composer and
music critic, he was an officer of the
Imperial Russian Army.
 In 1856, when he met Balakirev, his
musical direction changed and took an
engrossing interest in Balakirev’s
notion about a distinctively Russian
national style in music.

 Master of Orchestration
 Believed in developing a nationalistic
style of classical music as did his fellow
composers.
 Famous compositions include Capriccio
Espagnol, Op. 34, Russian Faster Festival
Overture and Scheherezade.
 Died on June 21, 1908 due to angina.
