The higher the crude quality, the higher the market price
relative to the prevailing average price for all crude oil.
(1) light crudes have higher natural yields of the components that
go into the more valuable light products, and
(2) sweet crudes contain less sulfur. Hence, light sweet crudes
require less energy to process and call for lower capital
investment to meet given product demand and quality
standards than heavier, more sour crudes.
Light sweet/heavy sour price differentials fluctuate over time
and vary from place to place, due to the interplay of many
