INTRODUCTION
A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation
of data, which shows data about the object to which it
attaches. Originally, barcodes represented data in the
widths(lines) and the spacing's of parallel lines.
Now, They also come in patterns of
squares,dots,hexagons and other geometric patterns
within images . Barcodes can be read by optical scanners
called barcode readers.
TYPES OF BARCODE:
 LINEAR BARCODE(CONSISTS OF BLACK BARS AND WHITE
SPACE)

 2D BARCODE(COMPOSED OF GRID OF LIGHT AND DRAKS

MODULE)
Anatomy of Barcode
 Number system character :This number is a UPC system
number that characterizes specific types of barcodes.
 Three guard bars:They are located at the
beginning,middle,end.The beginning and ending guard
bars are encoded as a “bar_space_bar” or 101.The middle
guard bar encoded as “space_bar_space_bar_space” or
01010.
 Manufactures code:Five digit number specifically assigned
to the manufacturer of the product.
 Product code:Five digit number that the manufacture
assigns for a particularproduct.
 Check digit:The check digit is an “old programmers trick”
to validate the other digits were read correctly.
Codes of the Number System
Character:
 0-Standard UPC number.
 1-Reserved.
 2-Random weight items like fruits,vegetable and
meats,etc.
 3-Pharmaceuticals
 4-In store code for retailers.
 5-Coupons.
 6-Standard UPC number.
 7-Standard UPC number.
 8-Reserved
 9-Reserved
Barcode Standard’s

 Universal Product code (UPC): The Universal Product

Code is a barcode symbology(specific type of
barcode),that is widely used in Canada and the US for
tracking trade items in stores.
 European article number(EAN):An EAN-13
barcode(original European Article Number) is a bar
coding standard which is a superset of the original 12-
digit Universal Product Code (UPC) system developed in
the United States.
 A UPC barcode is also an EAN-13 barcode with frist digit
set to zero.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
 Barcode can only read one item at a time.
 Failure rate in barcodes are relatively high for self
checkout system.
 Laser scanners can only read one dimensional(linear)
barcodes .
 If the scanner lens is scratched or damaged in any way,
it can not be scanned.
WHAT IS BARCODE READER??
 A barcode reader is an electronic device for reading
printed barcodes.
 It consists of a light source, a lens and a light sensor
translating optical impulses .
 All barcode readers contain decoder circuit analysing
the barcode image data provided by the sensor and
sending the barcode’s content to the scanners output
port.
WORKING
 A bar code consists of a series of parallel, adjacent
bars and spaces.symbologies are used to encode
small strings of character data in to a printed symbol.
 A barcode reader decodes a bar code by scanning a
light source across the bar code and measuring the
intensity of light reflected back by white spaces. The
pattern of reflected light is detected with a photo
diode which produces an electronic signal that
exactly matches the printed bar code pattern. This
signal is then decoded back to the originally data by
electronic circuit.
TYPES OF BARCODE READER
There are 4 basic types of barcode readers.

 Pen type readers

 Slot scanner
 Charge coupled device (CCD ) scanner
 image scanner
PEN TYPE READERS
 Pen type readers consist of a light source and a
photo diode that are placed next to each other in
the tip of a pen .
 To read barcode, you drag the tip of the pen
across all the bars in a steady even motion.
SLOT SCANNER
 A slot scanner remains stationary and the item
with the barcode on it is pulled by hand through
the slot. Slot scanners are typically used to
scan barcodes on the identification cards.
CHARGE-COUPLE
DEVICE(CCD)READERS
 A CCD scanner has a better read range than the pen and is
often used in retail sales. Typically a CCD scanner has a gun
type interface and has to be held no more than one inch
from the bar code. Each time the bar code is scabbed,
several readings are taken to reduce the possibilities of
errors.
 A disadvantages of the CCD scanner is that it cannot read a
barcode that is wider than its input face.
CAMERA BASED READERS/
IMAGE SCANNER
 The newest type of barcode reader currently
available are camera based readers that use a
small video camera to capture an image of a
barcode. The reader then uses sophisticated
digital image processing techniques to decode
the barcode .
 It generally costs less than a laser scanner.
WHY USE BARCODES??
 When barcodes are used in the business
process, producers are automated to increase
productivity and reduce human error.
 Instead of manually typing a customer
identification number into a database, if the
information is contained in a barcode, a data
entry operator may scan it in.This would
increase automation and reduce human error.
APPLICATIONS

 For Departmental stores.

 For Libraries.
 For Industry purpose.
 Health Care applications.
 Document tracking.
ADVANTAGES
&DISADVANTAGES
 Advantages
 Represent unique identity of a product.
 Cost efficient
 Real time data collection
 Rapid access to total production costs.
 Disadvantages
 System failure may cost more delays
 Scratched barcodes may cause problems
CONCLUSION
 This barcode technology is used all over world.
 Positive impact on daily life.
 It has its versatile use and it is user friendly.
