Design constraints for design of heart valves

1.Non-obstructive
2. Closure is prompt and complete
3. Non-thrombogenic
4. Infection-resistant
5. Chemically inert and non-haemolytic
6. Durable for extended intervals
7. Easily and permanently inserted into an
appropriate [physiologic] site
8. Interface between prosthesis and patient
heals appropriately
9. Not annoying to the patient (noise-free)

Bileaflet heart valve

•In 1979 the bileafleted design introduced

•Composed of two semicircular leaflets that shifted open and close
•The leaflets swing completely

Materials of construction

The three main components of valves are:

•Frame
•Leaflets
•Sewing ring

Mechanism of working

•Valves open when pressure changes

•Opens into three sections
•Two outer orifices- speed-2.2 m/s
•Central orifice –speed-2m/s
