DEALING WITH VARIOUS CHALLENGES DURING ADOLESCENCE,
MENTAL DISORDERS CAN BE PREVENTED. ALSO
REINFORCEMENT OF FACTORS SUCH AS SELF-ESTEEM,
RESILIENCE PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS, SOCIAL SKILLS STRESS
MANAGEMENT, AND SELF REGULATION, THE TENDENCY BE AT
RISK AND DEVELOP MENTAL DISORDERS CAN BE AVOIDED.
ENHANCING SELF-ESTEEM
SELF-ESTEEM MEANS SELF WORTH. YOUR ASSESSMENT OF YOUR
IMPORTANCE AS A PERSON REFERS TO YOUR SELF-ESTEEM.
ADOLESCENTS WITH HIGH SELF-ESTEEM, CONFIDENT, OPTIMISTIC, FEEL
GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES, AND FIND WAYS ON HOW TO
CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE THEMSELVES. ACCORDING TO SAVIN-
WILLIAMS AND DEMON (1983). PEOPLE WITH HIGH SELF ESTEEM MAY
EXHIBIT SOMEOR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING BEHAVIORS: EXPRESS THEIR
OPINIONS, INITIATE CONVERSATION WITH OTHERS, WORK
COOPERATIVELY WITH A GROUP, AND MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT.
ON THE OTHER HAND, ADOLESCENTS WHO HAVE LOW SELF-ESTEEM
OFTEN VIEW THEMSELVES IN A NEGATIVE WAY, FEEL INADEQUATE,
AND VIEW THEMSELVES AS INCOMPETENT. SOMETIMES, THEY EVEN
CLAIM THAT THEY ARE BAD AND WOULD BLAME THEMSELVES, DUE TO
DISTORTED BELIEF’S ABOUT THEMSELVES. INDIVIDUALS MAY DEVELOP
INSECURITIES AND MAY HAVE INFERIORITY COMPLEX. LOW SELF-
ESTEEM MAY EVEN CAUSE DEPRESSION, WHICH IS A MENTAL
DISORDER. ON THE CONTRARY, UNREALISTIC HIGH SELF-ESTEEM MAY
CAUSE ARROGANCE AND A FALSE SENSE OF SUPERIORITY OVER
OTHERS. THUS, YOU HAVE TO ASSESS YOUR SELF-ESTEEM.
