MATTHEW 5:38–48

38“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye,
and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, do not
resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your
right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone
wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have
your coat also. 41 Whoever forces you to go one mile,
go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks of you, and
do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from
you.
MATTHEW 5:38–48

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love

your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to
you, love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your
Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise
on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the
righteous and the unrighteous.
MATTHEW 5:38–48

46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do

you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
47 If you greet only your brothers, what more are you
doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the
same? 48 Therefore you are to be perfect, as your
heavenly Father is perfect.

Be Truly Christlike:
Go the Extra Mile
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

How do you usually respond when someone does

something wrong toward you?
How do we relate the message to the season?
God’s message correlates to the season of giving.
When man fails to obey God’s command, instead of
punishing us for what we deserve, He offered His Son.
Only to be insulted, mocked and crucified.
BECAUSE OF HIS GREAT LOVE TOWARD US
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

40 If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let

him have your coat also.41 Whoever forces you to go
one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks of
you, and do not turn away from him who wants to
borrow from you.
God modeled great love for us to follow.
And only a person filled with great love for God can do
such noble task.
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

Why did God want us to show love for those who

wronged us?
Because He prepared great reward for us. V.46
Because He want us to be perfect. V.48
Great reward and perfection therefore comes from
focusing on God and His promises.
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter

of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured
the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right
hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2
Where is the reward and perfection in the text?
Consider Him who endured such opposition from
sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose
heart. Hebrews 12:3
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

Why did Jesus redefined justice system of the old?

Because during the dispensation of the law, equality
must be preserve but in the dispensation of grace, love
prevails over sin.
For sin shall not be your master, because you are not
under law, but under grace. Romans 6:14
Clearly no one is justified before God by the law,
because the righteous will live by faith. Galatians 3:11
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

What is the purpose of the law?

The law was added because of transgressions until the
Seed to whom the promise referred had come.
Galatians 3:19
But in the Old Testament, this law was given a proper
context: it was to protect civilization from unrestrained
revenge (Leviticus 24:19-20)
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

The practice of eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth is a

famous law of retaliation called ‘Lex Talionis.’
That is, fair justice system which demands that penalty
must be proportionate to the crime.
However, Jesus wants His followers to go beyond this
fair law of retaliation.
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

At the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave four instances

of unjust acts and abuses and He taught how God’s
people should respond.
INSULT “SLAP” (MATTHEW 5:39)
INJUSTICE “SUE” (MATTHEW 5:40)
INCONVENIENCE “SERVICE” (MATTHEW 5:41)
EXTORTION “DEMAND” (MATTHEW 5:42)
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

1. INSULT “SLAP” (MATTHEW 5:39)

39 But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but
whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other
to him also.
Since majority of people are right handed we get
slapped on the left cheek. So to be slap one on the right
cheek means to slap with the backhand, the worst kind
of slap, more degrading than being whipped.
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

1. INSULT “SLAP” (MATTHEW 5:39)

Yet, Jesus is saying that when we are insulted at its
worst, we should not fight back.
Today, people can insult us in any way and occasion at
their whim and pleasure, but the true followers of Christ
will respond in Christlike manner, different from normal
reactions

2. INJUSTICE “SUE” (MATTHEW 5:40)

40 If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let
him have your coat also.
Some people will use the legal system frivolously just to
cause problems or to serve their self-interests. If people
falsely accuse you, instead of retaliating, be Christlike in
your response.

Roman soldiers are legally allowed to force anybody to
carry anything for them one mile.

4. EXTORTION “DEMAND” (MATTHEW 5:42)

42 Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away
from him who wants to borrow from you.
If people are in need we are to help generously, but we
must be discerning to avoid extortion.
Help people but be wise, do not spoil them, help them
also to help themselves (2 Thessalonians 3:10).

4. EXTORTION “DEMAND” (MATTHEW 5:42)

What about P.D. No. 1563 or Anti-Mendicancy Law of
1978?
Should we continue to give to the begging indigents
roaming the streets?
What about carolers?
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

4. EXTORTION “DEMAND” (MATTHEW 5:42)

Do not withhold good from those who deserve it,
when it is in your power to act.

MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

The principle behind Jesus’ teaching about the law of

non-retaliation shows us the heart of God. God is the
God of justice and He will judge according to His terms in
His time.
Never take your own revenge instead leave room for
God’s wrath. We do not have to take things into our
own hands because vengeance is God’s (Romans 12:19).
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

To be able to accomplish all these, THEREFORE…

BE TRULY CHRISTLIKE
The secret of being truly Christlike and thus going the
extra mile is loving your enemies (Matthew 5:43– 45).
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and
hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for
those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father
who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the
good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

To be able to accomplish all these, THEREFORE

BE TRULY CHRISTLIKE
Loving people especially the unlovable to us will glorify
our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16, 45).
If we are hurt when evil people insult, persecute and
extort on us, it’s because we focus on more ourselves
not on Christ.
Let your light before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your
Father in heaven. Mt. 5:16
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

To be able to accomplish all these, THEREFORE

BE TRULY CHRISTLIKE
Our supernatural responses to unjust acts will tell the
world that we truly belong to Christ (vv.46–47).
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do
you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47
If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing
than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

To be able to accomplish all these, THEREFORE

BE TRULY CHRISTLIKE
Jesus is our model, if we follow Him seriously we will be
radically different from the ways of the world.
Being truly Christlike is being able to be what God has
designed us as His children (Matthew 5:48).
48 Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father
is perfect.
MATTHEW 5:38–48 Be Truly Christlike: Go the Extra Mile

BE TRULY CHRISTLIKE
Philippians 2:5-9 “Your attitude should be the same as
that of Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God did not consider equality with
God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human
likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself
and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!”

BE TRULY CHRISTLIKE
Philippians 2:5-9 “Your attitude should be the same as
that of Christ Jesus:
THEREFORE GOD EXALTED HIM TO THE HIGHEST
PLACE AND GAVE HIM THE NAME THAT IS ABOVE
EVERY NAME.”
Perfection therefore is living in Christ and walking with
Christ in perfect humility.
“Whatever happen, conduct
yourselves in a manner
worthy of the Gospel of
Christ.” Philippians 1:27
