WHAT IS

PRESSURE
Pressure is an expression of force exerted on a surface per unit area. The

?
standard unit of pressure is the pascal (Pa), equivalent to
one newton per meter squared (N/m 2 or N · m -2). Alternatively, pressure
can be measured in dynes per centimeter squared (dyn/cm 2 or dyn · cm -
2).

PRESSURE is the continuous physical force exerted on or against an object

by something in contact with it.

 What does pressure mean?
 If you tried to hammer a bowling pin into the wall, nothing would probably happen except
for people deciding to no longer lend you their bowling pins. However, if you hammer with
the same force on a nail, the nail would be a lot more likely to penetrate the wall. This
shows that sometimes just knowing the magnitude of the force isn't enough: you also have
to know how that force is distributed on the surface of impact. For the nail, all the force
between the wall and the nail was concentrated into the very small area on the sharp tip
of the nail. However, for the bowling pin the area touching the wall was much larger, and
therefore the force was much less concentrated.

To make this concept precise, we use the idea of pressure. Pressure is defined to be the
amount of force exerted per area.

WHAT DOES

PRESSURE
DEPEND ON ?
UNIT
OF
PRESSURE
In SI system , Force is measured in Newton and Area in M2 .
Therefore , the unit of Pressure is N/M2 . However , N/M2 is
called PASCAL , in honour of French physicist , BLAISE PASCAL
( 1623 – 1662 ) .

THUS , WHEN A FORCE OF 1N ACTS ON

AN AREA OF 1M2 , THE PRESSURE ACTING
ON THE SURFACE IS ONE PASCAL (PA) .
WHAT IS
HIGH PRESSURE
AND
LOW PRESSURE ?
HIGH PRESSURE
IF FORCE IS MORE AND THE SURFACE AREA IS LESS
, THEN THE PRESSURE APPLIED IS CALLED HIGH
PRESSURE .

LOW PRESSURE
IF FORCE IS LESS AND THE SURFACE AREA IS MORE
, THEN THE PRESSURE APPLIED IS CALLED LOW
PRESSURE .
BLOOD
PRESSURE
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE :-
First, let’s define high blood pressure
High blood pressure (HBP or hypertension) is when your blood pressure, the force
of your blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels, is consistently too
high.
LOW BLOOD PRESSURE :-
A blood pressure reading lower than 90 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) for the
top number (systolic) or 60 mm Hg for the bottom number (diastolic) is generally
considered low blood pressure. The causes of low blood pressure can range
from dehydration to serious medical or surgical disorders.

NUMERICALS :-
ALWAYS REMEMBER :-
P = PRESSURE
F = FORCE
A = AREA
Q. A FORCE OF 25 N ACTS ON A BODY OF
AREA OF CROSS-SECTION 20CM2 . CALCULATE
THE PRESSURE EXERTED BY THE BODY IN
PASCAL.
SOLUTION :-
FORCE (F) = 25 N
AREA (A) = 20 CM2 = 200/10000 M2
PRESSURE (P) = F = 25 N X 10000 = 12500 PA
A 20 M2

ANS – 12500 PA .
Q. WHAT IS THE MAGNITUDE OF FORCE
REQUIRED IN NEWTONS , TO PRODUCE A
PRESSURE OF 27500 PA ON AREA OF 200 CM2 ?

SOLUTION :-
FORCE (F) = ?
AREA (A) = 20 CM2 = 200/10000 M2
PRESSURE (P) = 27500 PA
P=F/A
F = P X A = 27500 X 200 M2 = 550 N
10000
ANS- 550N .
Q. A FORCE OF 75 N CAN PRODUCE A PRESSURE
OF 150,000 PA . CALCULATE THE AREA IN CM2
ON WHICH THE FORCE ACTS .

SOLUTION :-
FORCE (F) = 75 N
AREA (A) = ?
PRESSURE (P) = 150,000 PA
NOW P=F/A
:. F = 75 = 1 M2 = 1 X 10000 CM2 = 5CM2
A 150,000 2000 2000
ANS – 5 CM2 .
