WHAT IS CHI SQUARE ?
• Chi square is used to describe the magnitude of
difference between observed frequencies and
expected frequencies under certain assumption.
• Chi square ranges from 0 to infinity
• The value 0 indicates that accepted frequencies
and observed frequencies are coincide so greater
difference between observed frequencies and
expected frequencies
• This is developed by Prof. PEARSON in 1990.
USES
• Useful for test of goodness of fit.
• Useful for test of independence of attributes.
• Useful for test of homogeneity.
• Useful for test of given population values
(variants).
Steps involve in chi square as
goodness of fit
• Set the null hypothesis & alternate hypothesis X
• =(O-E)2/E
• Find the chi square value with the
• O= observed frequency
• E= expected frequency
• Find the degree of freedom DF = N-r-1
• r= no. of independent constants
• find the table value corresponding to DF and level of
significance
• Decide whether to accept the null hypothesis or reject
the null hypothesis.
