What is Tectonic
Plate?
Plate
Tectonics
•A theory in geology:the
lithosphere of the EARTH is
divided into small numbers of
plates which float on and travel
independently over the EARTH'S
seismic activity occurs at the
boundaries of these plates.
• Continental drift s was a theory that
explained how continents shift
position on Earth's surface.Set forth in
1912 by Alfred Wegener,a geophysicist
and meteorologist,continental drift
also explained why look-alike animals
and plant fossil ,and similar rock
formations,are found different
continents.
•The idea of a large-scale displacement of
continents has a long history.Noting the apparent fit of
the bulge of eastern South America into the bight of
Africa, the German naturalist Alexandre Von Humboldt
theorized about 1800 that the lands bordering the
Atlantic Ocean had once joined . Some 50 years
later,Antonio snider-Pellegrini ,a French scientist
,argued that the presence of identical fossilplant in
both North American and European coal deposit could
be explained if the two continents had formerly been
connected,a relationship otherwise difficult to account
for. In 1908 Frank B. Taylor of the United States
invoked the notion of continental collision to explain
Evidence
A map of the Continents inspired Wigener's
quest to explain Earth's Geologic history. Trained as
Metereologist, he was intrigued by the interlocking
Fit of Africa's and South America's shorelines.
Wegener then assembled and impressive amount
of evidence to show that Earth's continents we're
once connected in a single continents. Wegener
know that Fossil plants and Animals such as
Mesosaurs, a freshwater reptile only found in South
America and Africa during the Permian period,
could be found in many Continents, he also
matched up rocks on either side of the Atlantic
Ocean like puzzle pieces .
In fact, plates moving together created
the highest mountains in the world, the Plate
Tectonics is now the widely accepted theory
that the Earth Crust is fractured into rigid,
moving Plates.
According to Encyclopedia Britannica,in
1960s, Scientist discovered the Plates edges
through magnetic surveys of the Oceans floor
and through the Seismic Listening networks
builts to monitor nuclear testing.
Movement of Plates
Movement along this faults may
be Horizontal or Vertical... In
conclusion, the movement of the
Earth's surface due to process
such as compression, tension and
shearinf, and in doing so, deform
and rearrange the Earth's crust.
If a large slab or plates of
the Earth's surface is gradually
squeezed, the solid rock slowly
wrinkles and crumples. It's
layers becomes wavy folds.
When, in other places, rocks are
stretched or bent they cracks
are known as faults.
The movement of the Plates
creates three types of Tectonics
boundaries:
Convergent, where plates move
into one another
Divergent, where plates move
apart
Transform, where Plates move
Sideways in relation to each other.
Seafloor Spreads
Seafloor Spreading is a
process that occurs at mid-
ocean ridges, where new
oceanic crust is formed
through Volcanic Activity
from the ridge.
Seafloor Spreading helps
explain Continental Drift in the
Theory of Plate Tectonics. When
Oceanic Plates Diverge, tensional
stress causes fractures to occur in
the Lithosphere... At a Spreading
center, basaltic cools in the Ocean
floor to form new Seabed.
Structure and Evolution
Active Ocean basins undergo change
mainly due to Plate tectonics. Plate
Tectonics is the Theory used to explain
dynamics of the Earth's surface
resulting from the interaction of the
overlying rigid of Plates with the
underlying mantle. The Earth has a
rigid outer layer called the Crust.
This Crust is somewhat fragile, and
like the shell of a hard-boiled egg, it can
crack and break into Plates. The Earth's
crust breaks due to Heat and Pressure
from the layer beneath the crust, called
the Mantle.
Ocean basins can be either active,
with a lot of new structures being
created and shaped, or they can be
inactive, where their surface is slow to
change and does little more than collect
sediments.
These Plates move very slowly and meet at
their boundaries. These boundaries are
common areas of tectonic Activity, which is
the Deformation of the Earth's crust due to
movement of Tectonic Plate, resulting in
activity(such as Earthquakes, volcanoes, and
Mountain buildings).
An ocean basin can be through of as a
large bowl that holds hand ocean water. The
floors of our worlds oceans contains features
that you might recognize as being similar to
some structures on land.
