Lesson 4
Pencil Tool
• The Pencil Tool is used for drawing solid lines and strokes. This tool has the
exact function as the pencil being used in writing and drawing. This creates
hard edged strokes. The shortcut is [SHIFT+B].
Brush Tool
• The Brush Tool is used for painting strokes using patterns that are available
on the options bar menu. The shortcut is [SHIFT+B].
History Brush Tool
• Use the History Brush Tool to paint the selected state or snapshot to return it to its previous look. The
shortcut is [SHIFT+Y]. The History Brush tool allows painting a copy of one state or snapshot of an
image into the current image into the current image window. This tool makes a copy, or sample, of the image
and then paints with it.
• For example, make a snapshot of a change made with a painting tool or
filter. After undoing the change in the image, use the History Brush Tool
to apply the change selectively to areas of the image.
Unless a merged snapshot is selected, the History Brush Tool paints from
a layer in the selected state to the same layer in another state.
• The History Brush Tool works similarly to the Clone Stamp Tool. But
unlike the clone stamp tool, it can work on any state or snapshot of the
image and not just the current one, In Adobe Photoshop, it is also
possible to paint with the art history brush to create special effects.
Art History Brush Tool
• The Art History Brush Tool paints with stylized strokes the stimulate the
look of different paint styles using a selected state or snapshot. The shortcut
is [SHIFT+Y].
Paint Bucket Tool
The Paint Bucket Tool fills similarly colored areas with the foreground color.
Click the Paint Bucket Tool from the toolbox, select the color to apply and click
on the part of the image to fill. The shortcut is [SHIFT+G].
Gradient Tool
• The Gradient Tool creates and fills color to an area. It fills a gradient or a set
of color spectrum over an image. This can be done by drawing a line over
the image. The shortcut is [SHIFT+G].
Eraser Tool
• The Eraser tool erases pixels and restores parts of an image to a previously
saved state. The shortcut is [SHIFT+E].
Background Eraser Tool
• The Background Eraser Tool erases areas into transparency by clicking on a
specific part of the image. The shortcut is [SHIFT+E].
Magic Eraser Tool
• The Magic Eraser Tool erases solidly colored areas with a single clock. The
shortcut is [SHIFT+E].
Editing Tools
• The Editing Tools in Adobe Photoshop are used to make corrections on the
image. The most common uses of these tool are for removing face
blemishes or pimples, adjusting the darkness and brightness of light, and
even, making a duplicate of a certain part of the image.
Clone Stamp Tool
• The Clone Stamp Tool paints with a sample of an image then clones that
portion to another place. The shortcut is [SHIFT+S].
Pattern Stamp Tool
• The Pattern Stamp Tool paints with part of an image as a pattern. The shortcut is
[SHIFT+S].
• In addition to using the libraries of patterns provided with Adobe Photoshop, it is possible
to create one’s own custom patterns. Once patterns are created, they can be saved in a
library. Load and manage libraries of patterns using the Preset Manager. This allows the
easy use of multiple patterns in an image. The pattern stamp tool can also be used to paint
with a pattern.
Healing Brush Tool
• The Healing Brush Tool is used to correct imperfections of an image. It uses
the sampled image to paint to another image and blends it with the texture,
lighting, transparency, and shading resulting to a healing effect on the image.
The shortcut is [SHIFT+J].
Patch Tool
• The Patch Tool is used to fix a selected area with a part or pixels of another
image. The Patch Tool functions the same way as the healing brush tool
which matches certain characteristics of a sampled image. The shortcut
[SHIFT+J].
Spot Healing Brush Tool
• The Spot Healing Brush Tool lets you fix some issues in an image suck as
unwanted mark, skin blemishes, and visible spots. The shortcut key is
[SHIFT+J].
Content-Aware Move Tool
• The Content-Aware Move Tool is used to select a certain part of an image
then moving that part then the hole left behind will be recomposed to create
a filler image matching the picture elements around it. The shortcut key is
[SHIFT+J].
Red Eye Tool
• The Red Eye Tool is simply correcting the appropriate color of the eyes on
the photograph with just one click. The shortcut key is [SHIFT+J].
Blur, Sharpen, Smudge Tool
• The Blur Tool blurs hard edges of an image.
• The Sharpen Tool sharpens soft edges of an image.

Dodge Tool
• The Dodge Tool lightens areas on an image. The shortcut is [SHIFT+Q].
Burn Tool
• The Burn Tool darkens areas on an image. The shortcut is [SHIFT+O].
Sponge Tool
• The Sponge Tool changes the color saturation of an area . The shortcut is
[SHIFT+O].
