• The United Kingdom joined the European Economic Community, commonly
referred to by the British as the "Common Market", on 1 January 1973, under the
conservative government of Edward Heath. The Labour Party, led in opposition
by Harold Wilson, contested the general elections in October 1974 with the aim
of renegotiating the terms of membership of the United Kingdom to the EEC and,
subsequently, holding a referendum on permanence in the EEC in accordance
with the new terms.

• In June 23th of 2016 UK voted to leave EU, the prime minister resigned and
Scotland was considering a referendum to leave UK.
