COGNITIVE STIMULATION THERAPY

DEFINITON
• Cognitive Stimulation Theraphy (CST) is a structured group treatment for
people wth mild to moderat dementia (Cheung and Peri, 2014)
• It can be delivered easily in both community and residential care setting
• CST was designed following extensive evaluation of research evidence,
hence is an evidence based treatment (Spector et all, 2003)
• Uk Government NICE Guidence on the management of dementia
recommend the use of group cognitive stimulation for people with mild to
moderate dementia, irrespective of drug treatment received
• NICE = National Institute for Health and Care Excellent  England
BENEFIT CST
• The benefit of CST include a positive effect on mood, improved memory and
improved quality of life
TREATMENT
• CST treatment involves 14 or more session of themes activities, which typically
run twice weekly
• Longer term or maintenance CST is outlined in a published treatment manual
• Sessions aim to actively stimulate and engage people with dementia, whilst
providing an optimal learning environment and the social benefits of a
group.
• The effects of CST appear to be of a comparable size to those reported with
the currently available anti-dementia drugs.
TREATMENT
• CST consist of 14 session usually delivered over seven weeks
• The session include a range of activities and discussion aimed at enchanging
cognitive and social functioning
• The sessions actively engage people with dementia, while providing an
optimal learning environment and the social benefits of being part of a
group
• Group members choose a name of the group
• Each session starts with a warm up activity and has a theme song
• Information about the group is displayed on a board at each session
SESSION CST
• Session can include:
1. Physical games 8. Being creative
2. Sound 9. Categorising object
3. Childhood 10. Orientation
4. Food 11. Using money
5. Current affair 12. Number games
6. Faces/scene 13. Word games
7. Wordassociation 14. team quiz
PROVIDER
• CST treatment can be administered by anyone working with people with dementia,
such as care workers, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists or nurses.
• CST groups can take place in settings including residential homes, hospitals or day
centres.
• Practitioners can learn to provide CST treatment for people with dementia by
following the CST manual or attending CST training.
• More recently, a one-to-one individualised version of CST, known as iCST, has been
developed. Sessions follow similar themes and principles to group CST, and can be
offered by family carers of health professionals.

• CST provision
• Geriatri club was established in 2009 for the healthy elderly, people with mild
cognitive impairment and mild dementia. Its aims are around mental, physical and
social activity. Activities are twice a week (from 09.00 until 11.00 in Pantai Indah
Kapuk Hospital) and include exercise, CST and health education.
