 Independent variables – are represented by the x-axis they are
inputs.
 Dependent variables – are represented by the y-axis they are
outputs.

 How do you identify dependent and idependent varible?

 For Independent Variables- you ask yourself, can I choose a value
for this variable?
 For Dependent Variables- ask yourself, does this value change
because of another variable?

 Dependent variable depends on the independent variable.
 Independent variable controls the dependent variable.

Your height and your age

 In example 1 the dependent variable is the height because our height changes
because of our age or its changing because of something. The independent
variable is age because our height is depending on our age.
 Example 2
 The dependent variable is the weight because or weight changes because of
our eating and our food or the amount the dog is eating is the independent
variable because we can choose how much food we can feed our dogs we
cannot choose what our dog weighs
 Example 3
 The dependent variable is the temperature because it depends on the ice
added. The independent variable is the ice added you can choose the amount
of ice you add.
Remember

 An idependent variable is represented by x and you choose its value.

 A dependent variable is represented by y and its value changes because of the
independent.

 Therefore, you can tell if a variable is independent or dependent by

completing the sentence.
