WHAT IS FLY ASH?
• Fly ash concrete is an
eco-friendly construction
material in which fly ash
replaces a part of
portland cement.
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FLY ASH

• There are two types of fly ash

i. Class F-Low calcium content and has a carbon content less than 5
pecent.
ii. Class C-Higher calcium content and has a carbon content less
than 2 percent.
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

• Fly ash is slightly finer

than portland cement.
• Similar cement matrix
distribution.
• Contain similar chemical
compounds in different
properties.
WORKABILITY

• Flyb ash particles have a

spherical.
• Creates a ball-bearing like
effect.
• Increases the workability of the
fresh concrete.
HYDRATION PROPEERTIES

• Fly ash will increases hydration time.

• Fly ash will reduce heat of hydration.
RESISTANCE TO ABRASION AND CORROSION

• Resistance to abrasion is based on aggregate properties and concrete

strength.
• Fly ash may provide greater long term abrasion resistance due to high
strength.
• Corrosion resistance is based on the permeability of concrete.
• Fly ash concrete has very low permeability giving is excellent
corrosion resistance.
RECYCLED PRODUCT

• Fly ash is a recycled residue from coal combustion.

• Collection of fly ash is an air pollution control standard.
• Reduces the use of portland cement that needs to be produced.
• Reduces energy and resource use.
ADVANTAGES

• Improved long term strength.

• Improved workabilitity.
• Lower heat of hydration.
• Resistance to chloride ion penetration.
• Resistance to alkali-silica reaction.
DISADVANTAGES

• Low early strength.

• Elimination of bleeding.
• Reduction of shear strength.
• Reduction of bonding strength.
• Increased air-entrainment requirment.
