OBJECTIVE

To discuss the philosophy of

idealism
To determine the implications
of idealism in Educational
System
What is idealism?
It is a philosophical belief that
material things do not exist
independently on the physical world
but only in the mind.

A belief where in the nature of humans

and the environment is naturally,
constantly and permanently good, true
HISTORY OF IDEALISM
Plato is the father of idealism, he believed that the
soul is fully fanned prior to birth and is perfect
and one with the universal being.

He told that there are two kinds of world

1) spiritual and mental world- “super
nature”, spirits, higher world
2) world of appearance- “nature”,
material, lower world
HISTORY OF IDEALISTIC EDUCATION IN
THE PHILIPPINES
The educational system that was established during the

presence of the Spaniards was absolutely idealist in nature.

Students were passive learners, while the teachers kept on

talking to consummate his lessons.

In the Philippine classrooms, a teacher is seen as the master

of the class and the students are the receivers of the
information that the teacher is teaching.
TYPES OF IDEALISM

Absolute- this lays down that the heart of

reality is to be found in thought or reason.

Modern- might be called a philosophy of

idealism
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF
IDEALISM

Two forms of the whole world

Ideas are more important than object
Importance of man over nature
Faith in spiritual values
Importance of personality development
Full support to the principle of unity in
diversity
IDEALISM AND AIMS OF EDUCATION

Self-realization
Universal education
Spiritual development
Transmission and promotion of cultural heritage
Cultivation of moral values
Preparation for a holy life
Development of intelligence and rationality
IDEALISM AND CURRICULUM

Idealist give more importance to thought, feelings,

ideals and values than to the child and his
activities.

The aim according to the philosophy of idealism is

to preserve and advance the culture of human race,
so subjects like Religion, Ethics, Philosophy,
History and Literature should be provided in the
curriculum.
IDEALISM AND THE TEACHING METHOD

Idealism has not prescribed specific methods of

teaching. However, the following methods have
been advocated:

learning through reading, lecturing, discussion

and imitation
IDEALISM AND ROLE OF TEACHER

Teacher is a spiritual guide for the child

and a living model for the students.
Idealism regards the teacher as the priest of
man’s spiritual heritage.
According to Gentle-A teacher is a
“spiritual symbol of right conduct”
According to Froebel, the school is a garden
and the teacher is a cautious gardener.
IDEALISM AND DISCIPLINE

“The discipline is not to be

imposed on pupils.”

Self-insight and self analysis are

the main disciplinary factors.
CONTRIBUTIONS OF IDEALISM TO
EDUCATION

Idealistic philosophy in education emphasizes “the

exaltation of personality,”, which is the result of
self realization, achieved by spiritual knowledge,
self-discipline and dignified teacher.

Idealism assigns a very important place to the

teacher who is respected as a guide and
philosopher.
EVALUATION OF IDEALISM
Idealism is an abstract and vague doctrine. It avoids the
present realities and prepares the child for the next world.
Idealism is concerned with the ultimate end of life. It avoids
the real problems day to day living.
Idealism lays more emphasis on thinking and mental
activities. This increases the importance of intellectualism
unnecessarily.
Idealistic education gives more importance to teacher in
relation to the child. Modern psychology emphasizes the
prime and central important of child.
Idealistic method of teaching emphasizes and cramming
and rote memory. In modern education, these methods are
given little importance.
