Design philosophy

A. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
The proposed “Ferry Terminal and Fishport in Sangali, ZamboangaCity” is a
new Gateway to the unique culture of the Zamboanga and also it is the key for the
industry to grow, open more job opportunities, more income and development of the
entire city. The economic state of Zamboanga City will increase more in terms of
trading and tourism, including its neighboring cities and municipalities. By the
proposal, it will highly help the whole city to improve and develop more, and the
entire region as well and it will attract more investors to invest and open business
establishments and it will cater good services to the tourists to coming in to the city.
The benefits will be more job opportunities will be opened, tourism will arise, more
investors and increase of income for the residences and business owners.

With this projects, the proponents have formulated the idea that a
philosophy which unifies a cohesive thought and ideals, reflect the goals and ideology
of the proposal wherein “Beauty + Strength + Function = 75% Architecture
+ People = 100% Architecture”. With this philosophy – “Beauty + Strength +
Function = 75% Architecture + people = 100% Architecture” – denotes to the
architectural design strategies and innovations that will be infused into the structure
itself. The proposal had been expressing this thought throughout the previous
chapters; which is evident on the goals and objectives of the study.

B. DESIGN GOALS & OBJECTIVES

DESIGN GOALS
The current state of some ports in the country is definitely alarming, travelling
by ship is one of the most affordable way of transportation an ordinary individual can
have. The proponent primary’s goal is to design and integrate a mix of structure in
one development with a recreational space adjacent to it, keeping in mind the comfort
and needs of the employees, passengers and common people. It will also be an aim of
the project to be a high quality of seaport, with the most advanced facilities and
features to satisfy all the need of employees, customs and tourists.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES
1. Facilitate the pedestrian and non-motorized forms of transport in order to
lessen the congestion in the area
2. To provide an extremely good surrounding with respect to the facilities
provided by the port like resting areas to all, parking for all users, etc.

204 | P a g e
3. To segregate the daily traffic and the port traffic, while giving them different
access points to the site.
Design concept

C. DESIGN CONCEPT
The Philosophy - “Beauty + Strength + Function = 75% Architecture
+ People = 100% Architecture”. A design concept very much in line with the Design
philosophy which is produces a new approach to the architectural design process. This
approach that is fused to design concept leads to an innovative kind of architecture
called “Fluidity Architecture.”

The mesh mimics the ocean waves and shows continuity in fluid architecture
is the main concept of the building. The main conceptual idea which represents
continuity in fluid Architecture and time by creating a form by the continuous
movement of the users. Mesh/ocean waves as a design concept is too general for the
proposal, the researcher identifies four (4) aspects fluidity that should be infused
within the proposal. Each of this aspects can be found throughout the proposal.

Seamless Experience

The users in the structures will experience a continuous motion

wherein they will experience different environmental programs
and activities in the building. In order to achieve this seamless
experience to the users of the building more considerations and
strategies should be follow and also to provide a facility that
assure the strength of the building for safety and comfortability of
the people and provide all the necessities of the users that will
satisfies the needs in order to be efficient and economy.

Beauty in Architecture lies in the performance and behavior of buildings

structure and façade elements as a component. The structure form should have an
aesthetic appeal while being simultaneously driven by engineering considerations. An
elegant design is the one that arises from engineering creativity, satisfies the
requirements of efficiency and economy, and is also elegant.

205 | P a g e
Seamless Interior spaces

Through continuity the users will be directed into spaces to different activities
and environment experience. This is through a choreographed arrangement of
architectural spaces in the site and in the building. It is also presented visually where
in there is a visual continuity towards the outside.

The function in the philosophical idea offers comprehensive space planning

service to achieve a function structure is essential; it shall provide comfort for the
users to access among facilities for spatial work activities. This will also include
proper road network implemented with proper landscape setting with pleasing
surrounding and controlling the physical access to public and private areas of the
buildings. This will ensure the spaces in both practical and beautiful through proper
space planning.

Proper space planning will assess the needs of the users with accessibility,
circulation, clearance, and provisions of the building constructions standards. In
planning the facilities needed, accessibility to the main site must be considered. The
site must situated at a convenient distance. It shall conform to the standards site
criteria requirement.

Seamless exterior spaces

Continuity is not only experienced inside the building but also through the
site. This approach is through directing spaces towards a continuous motion of users
of the building.

The Strength in the philosophical idea is very important among the rest
because we design buildings and other structures, inside and out carefully considering
engineering, functions and aesthetics. While architecture is an art, it is unlike most
other arts in that it’s both public and durables. Rather than being enjoyed only by its
owner like painting, well designed structures can enrich public life for decades,
sometimes centuries. Because buildings must be safe and functional. The purpose of
structural design is to design the most efficient structure that will allow the
development to perform its function. An efficient design takes into considerations
include the factors of reliability/safety, construction materials and both initial build
cost as well as life cycle cost.

206 | P a g e
D. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
In the current architectural trend sustainability has become a compulsory
feature in the design approach of a structure. The design aside from containing
philosophies and a concept, requires a set of considerations to successfully satisfy.
These considerations are evident in the physical properties of the proposal. The four
(4) following Design consideration were considered essential to the proposal are listed
below.

207 | P a g e
Porosity has been identified as essential design consideration in the proposals,
for it is embodies the principles of permeability in the space planning that allowing
maximum positive relationship with its user space within. (Refer to the diagram).
Porosity in the design aims to create a relationship with its users. The passengers/
visitor will be surrounded by the exterior environment that brings a sense of comfort
and tranquility, while shopping in the new space. Furthermore the effect of porosity
will be perceived from inside through a series of layers, not only materials, but with
the phenomenological components of this architecture design. Three main conditions
of lights are established, the unfiltered light through the curtain wall, the diffused
northern light of the skylight, and the zenithal light of the translucent glass roof that
serves as a seating area on the roof garden of the passenger terminal of the port.
Verticality here to refer to environments that spread their content with an
inclination to a vertical plane as opposed to a horizontal one, stacking areas on top of
each other in a harmonious, interconnected fashion. These environments often tend to
be busy, convoluted, dense and internally complex. Verticality is a design principle
that the proponent integrate in the design for its atmosphere and aesthetic. Verticality
can be utilize for other functions to minimizing structural carbon footprint in the
structure. (See diagram above)

Flexibility in the building as one of the design considerations of the

proponent, Increase building flexibility and ease of adaptive use over the life of the f.
Flexibility in the design can allow a building to evolve over time as the user needs
change. The flexibility of a building or elements of its design can allow it to be used
efficiently despite changes in operational requirements, whereas an inflexible building
might become obsolete. Flexibility might include active flexibility, such as moveable
partitions, but can also include the provision of features that are inherently flexible,
such as multi-use spaces, open plan offices, large floor-to-ceiling heights and high-
capacity service voids. It might also include broader characteristics such as a room’s
ability to expand or to use a range of different energy sources, deconstruct ability, and
so on. (See diagram above)
Hybrid here is refer to innovation features that integrate in the proposal.
This the best exhibited through the advent of modern facilities which makes the
services of the port more efficient and convenient to its users. Hybrid architecture’s is
the result of the hybridization of three diverse natures in one intervention: object-
related nature, landscape-related nature and infrastructure-related nature. Green
architecture which is green roof and green wall that are incorporating in the design
makes a breathtaking statement by creating alluring and inviting environments in the
seaport even though it is more on industrial activity. They are as equally impressive in
appearance as they are purveyors of good health; the plants in the walls work as a
natural air-filtration system that building occupants can enjoy. Employees are greeted
by a green lush environment while savoring the soothing effects of being around an
abundance of foliage. (See the diagram above for more design strategy to achieve the
hybrid design considerations.)

208 | P a g e
E. DESIGN STRATEGY
The design considerations is inspired by the basic principles applied to
“Fluidity”, this concept are very efficient towards its services. The main principles
of the ships are verticality, porosity, flexibility and hybrid. This principles that
adopt in design considerations for the development of the port are innovated into
this design development using current technology to produce the efficient and
sustainable seaport that can compete to other and the whole world. This section
provides specific design features that is applicable to each previously identified
design considerations. (Refer on diagram below)

A. DESIGN PARAMETERS
209 | P a g e
Some of the following considerations and conditions were applied to the proposed
project for the port facilities.

Calmness in the harbor

It is not clarified how much extent the calmness should be maintained to
secure the required function and safety. Generally speaking or ideally the rate of
workable days of ship operation should be secured about throughout the year. The
critical wave height depends on ship size and situation of the ship in the harbor. On
the table below are the following critical conditions for both passengers and cargo or
refuge mooring in harbors, which is usually applied in other Asian countries.

Table 5.1- Critical wave height for both passengers and cargo handling

Wind 500-10,000 15-20 m/s 15-20 m/s 20-30 m/s
velocity
(Note: The wind speed is the average wind speed for 10 minutes.)

Width of waterway
Main factors affecting the width of waterway are maneuvering capacity of
vessel, the length of the waterway, traffic volume, and relations with surrounding
water area and so on. There are many proposals regarding to the width of the
waterway. Among the most common is the following:

Table 5.2- Width of Waterway

One way Three to fourfold of the breadth of objective vessels

Two ways six to sevenfold of the breadth of objective vessels

Meanwhile, UNCTAD recommends 7B + 30 m (B is the breath of objective

vessels) for two way waterway in principle. In japan, the following criteria are applied
for two way waterway.

210 | P a g e
Table 5.2.1- Width of waterway (Two way)
Length of waterways Condition of Navigation Width
Relatively long waterways Waterways where ships pass 2L
each other frequently
Waterways where ships pass 1.5 L
each other frequently
Waterways other Waterways where ships pass 1.5 L
each other frequently
Waterways where ships pass L
each other frequently
(Note: L is the overall length of the ships)

This aspects poses no difficulty in the San Ramon site.

Depth of Waterway
The depth of waterway is the same as that of the basin within the harbor,
however, motions caused by waves, fluctuation of trim and so on should be
considered at the mouth of the port. Normally, 15 percent of the draft may be added.
Stopping Distance
The length of waterway at the harbor entrance and the area of adjoining
mooring basin should be determined by considering the stopping distance of the ship.
The ship should maintain some speed when approaching port. Therefore, securing
more than 5L as stopping distance is preferable.
Basin
A basin must secure a calm and sufficient wide water area and depth to
allow safe anchorage, smooth ship operation and cargo handling. It is preferable that
the bottom soil is suitable for anchoring.
Anchorage basin
A basin used for anchorage or mooring is a circular centered at the point
where the anchor is cast. The standardized sizes of radius adopted in other Asian
countries are as follows:

Table 5.3-Size of Anchoring Basin

Objective of use Type of mooring Width Radius
Swinging mooring 2L L+6D
Offshore L+BD+30m

(Note: L is overall length of ship. D is the water depth.)

Depths of Basin

211 | P a g e
The standardized depth of the basin is 1.1 times the full draft of the objective
vessels below the datum level. In japan, when the full draft of ship is unknown, the
values in the table below is used as the depth of basin.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The recommendation is to make two architectural design principles
collaborated so that formulating and achieving architectural solutions will be
beneficial to the proposed project. Another point is to follow design guidelines
including those of the mandated laws, ordinances and such principles in designing the
proposed project. Through architectural Innovations and Fluidity principles the
formulation of innovative solutions will be guided accordingly in terms of its
sustainability by maximizing the use of natural resources wherein it could be a
healthy approach for the development of the new “Ferry terminal and Fish port
Complex in Zamboanga City”. This approach will help not only to save the built
environment of the proposed project from pollutants but also to save the natural
resources even in a small and helpful way.

B. DESIGN SCHEMATIC

This chapter completes all research work done for this study. By combining
all the conclusion derived from the site analysis and by analyzing the spaces required
by the proposed project. The proponent zoned out all the spaces according to its
required areas and the solar orientation. Consideration to the site has been identified
by the proponent like the proposed road for the entrance/exit, the buildable area and
the necessary setback of the proposed project will be identified as shown in the figure
below.

The picture shows below a conceptualized site layout, each exhibiting the
possible building layouts and park/greneries.
