 What is Graft Polymer?
Graft copolymer is a type of copolymer in which one or more blocks of homopolymer are grafted as branches
onto a main chain, meaning it is a branched copolymer with one or more side chains of a homopolymer
attached to the backbone of the main chain.

 Why Grafting?
• Impart a variety of functional groups to a polymer.
• The modified polymers through grafting.

 Application
• Compatibiizer for Polymer blends
• Polymeric emulsifiers
• Drug deliverers
Process for Grafting of Maleic anhydride on Polypropylene
• We used Rheometer for Grafting process
• Grafting process will be done in 2 steps:
1. Change the conc. of Maleic Anhydride(MA) (0,1,2,3 & 4 phr)
2. Change the conc. of Initiator. (0.1, 0.2, 0.4 & 0.6 phr)
• The process is carried out at 1800C and 60 rpm for 10 min

 How to evaluate grafting process?

• By Titration of anhydride content.
• By Contact angle measurement
• By Thermal analysis (DSC)
 Properties of PP-g-MA
• Polarity of PP increases.
• Flow property increases.
• PP-g-MA enhanced tensile properties as well as Izod impact properties of notched samples of PP/PA6/PP-g-
MA blends compared to neat polypropylene.

 Application of Polypropylene grafted Maleic Anhydride (PP-g-MA)

• It used as a compatibiizer in a PP/PA Blend, which can be used in automotive sector for manufacture of
different automotive parts, like Instrumental Panel, Impact Beam etc.
