    The theory of plate tectonics describes the large-scale motions of Earth's outermost solid shell called the lithosphere, which is broken into tectonic plates that move over Earth's mantle. Continental drift, an important concept in plate tectonics, deals with the movement of Earth's continents relative to each other. Alfred Wegener first proposed continental drift, which later evolved into sea floor spreading and plate tectonics theory with the discovery of underwater mountain ranges spreading laterally away from mid-ocean ridges. There are three types of tectonic plate boundaries: convergent, divergent, and transform.
