Introduction
• Quality control in welding is carried out as part of an overall quality
assurance program.
• A quality welding will perform as its intended function.
• Welding inspection includes review of specifications, joint design,
cleaning procedures, welding procedures, testing.
• Welding inspection activities can be separated into three stages that
are prior to welding, during welding and upon completion of welding
Welding Codes and Standard
Numerous notable code and standard use in industry for quality control of
weldment. Ex.:-
–AWS; for example-:
•AWS D1.1
•AWS A5.4 Specification for Stainless Steel Electrodes for SMAW
–ASME
–ASTM
•ASTM E94 Standard Guide for Radiographic Examination1
–API
–BS
–BSEN
–ISO
Quality Control Before, During And After Welding
Before Welding
• Check welding equipment and calibration certificates
• Material identification, size, type and condition
• Welding process involved
• Consumables type, size, condition, storage and handling
During Welding

• Check weather condition

• Check clearance for welding/welder
• Check welding parameters as per WPS (Welding Procedure
specification) used
• Check interpass cleaning
• Maintain daily log book
After Welding
• Perform visual inspection
• Dimensional check ( as per drawing)
• Repairs (if any)
• Weld and welder identification ( check)
