DESIGN OF A FLEXIBLE PERMEABLE PAVEMENT ON

KESSES-CHEPTIRET ROAD AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO

CONVECTIONAL ROAD DRAINAGE
CSE/13/16 CAROLINE

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The lack of a drainage system has led to the continuous
pavement failure due to water accumulation on this particular
pavement. Permeable pavement not only helps to mitigate the
storm water runoff and accumulation on the surface but also
includes other benefits to the pavement surface by reducing
the amount of runoff on the surface.
PERMEABLE PAVEMENT CROSS SECTION
LAYERS AND MATERIALS CHARACTERISTICS
MAIN OBJECTIVE
To come up with design parameters for the construction of a
flexible permeable pavement.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
1.To determine soil characteristics :- gradation, infiltration
2. To determine the hydrological patterns in the area :- rainfall
intensity, runoff
3. To determine the traffic volumes.
SIGNIFICANCE/ JUSTIFICATION
Continuous maintenance of the pavement through patching of
the potholes is costly and uncomfortable to the users.
Therefore a permanent solution to this problem is to construct
the flexible permeable pavement which has little maintenance
throughout its project life.
METHODOLOGY
1. Test on materials and evaluation of the traffic counts.
2. Data from the Moi university weather station.
3. Analysis of data and design.
ANALYSIS TOOLS
In order to analyse the data obtained from the field,
hydrological graphs will be drawn to illustrate precipitation,
inflow, surface runoff and surface water depth. While the
design structural number will be used to obtain the traffic
loadings using the AADT technique.
DATA COLLECTION
1. Traffic counts
2. Field collection of soil samples
EXPECTED RESULTS
From the tests on the soil (strength and other parameters) and
traffic loadings, we will be able to come up with a suitable
design of the pavement that fits this particular location.
