Business Protocol in
Australia
o Regarding dress code, men should wear a dark coloured, conservative business
suit. Similarly, women should wear a smart dress or a business suit. In Brisbane or
other tropical areas, depending on the job function and company culture, men may
wear shirts, ties and Bermuda shorts.
o Straightforward nature. : In terms of business, Australians are very blunt and to
the point.
o Be informal: Australians aren’t very formal, so be relaxed and casual when you are
greeting a potential client or business partner. However, just because they might
say ‘G’Day’ to you, that doesn’t mean you should use the phrase back, especially if
you’re not from the country. Stick to a polite ‘Hello’ and follow with standard English

terms.
o Australian are very open to new ideas, but don’t oversell or use
overly aggressive techniques, modesty is key.
o When Australians meet in business they (both men and women)
shake hand before and after meetings. It is considered rude to
not shake someone’s hand when he or she offers a handshake.
o If someone introduces themselves with their first name, you can
assume that you can call them that. If you don’t know how to
address someone, sir or madam is always fine.
o Offering gifts is not part of Australian business etiquette, but it is
acceptable to bring a small gift from your country.

Business Negotiations

o Australians get down to business quickly with a minimum amount of
small talk.
o Negotiations proceed quickly. Bargaining is not customary. They will
expect your initial proposal to have only a small margin for
negotiation.
o In meetings and negotiations Australians can come across as pretty
laid back. But beware, they are hard and direct business people.
There have no hidden agenda and will tell you what they think very
directly. Don’t be insulted when an Australian just tells you that he
thinks your product is not good enough.
