Dear LDM,
Our event planning class has been in the preliminary stages of organizing an event that links the harvesting of
olives with a traditional pagan Halloween celebration. We are interested in exploring the importance of the olive
harvest season and sharing this experience with the international community of LDM students. Since the harvest
season begins at the end of October, we felt that combining this with a Halloween party, appropriately on October 31st,
would be a fun and interesting way to celebrate both traditions.
We would link these two concepts together by incorporating elements from historic peasant Halloween and the
harvest season. Since this event aims to help students step away from the Americanized version of the holiday, we will
have a more unique agenda for our party. For example, the idea of trick or treating comes from the pagan tradition of
going door to door begging for “soul cakes.” They would collect these gifts to appease spirits, in hopes of having a
plentiful harvest. At our event, we would offer our own “soul cakes” in the form of olive oil. Instead of collecting this as
a gift for the “spirits,” students can keep this gift for themselves - which also represents the bountiful harvest of olives
this year!
This event also gives the students of the LdM community a chance to come together outside of the classroom.
This gives students the opportunity to meet some new faces, and share experiences from the semester thus far.
We hope that you enjoy this idea for our event as much as we do, and look forward to working together to put on a fun,
cultural, and educational event this harvest season.
Thank you.
