WHAT IS HYDROGEN ?

Hydrogen can be considered as the simplest

element found in nature.
This is the element which is very small and this is
the element which even does not have proper
position in our periodic table . It is because this is
the element which even acts like 1st group
elements and even as 17th group element.
Hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements in the
earth’s crust. Hydrogen as gas cannot be found naturally in
naure but need to be manufactured. This is because
hydrogen gas is lighter than air and raises into the
atmosphere. Natural Hydrogen is always associated with
other elements in nature such as water, coal, petroleum, etc….

Hydrogen is one of the highest energy content in any

common fuel by weight. Hydrogen has lowest energy content
by volume.
Hydrogen as an alternative form of energy
Besides other forms of energy like
• solar energy
• wind energy
• thermal energy
• Neuclear energy
• Tidal energy
Hydrogen is an efficient, non polluting form of energy
Hydrogen is considered as a secondary source of
energy. commonly known as energy carriers.
Energy carriers are used to move, store and
deliver energy in a form that it can be easily used.
-> Hydrogen as an important energy carrier has a
number of advantages.
• Hydrogen has high efficiency.
• Low polluting fuel that can be used for
transportation, heating, and power generation
in places where it is difficult to use electricity.
• It is cheaper to ship hydrogen by pipeline than
sending electicity over a long distances by wire.
• Hydrogen fuel helps in zero pollution.
Production of Hydrogen
Uses of Hydrogen
• Currently hydrogen is used as a fuel in NASA
space program.
• Liquid hydrogen is used to propel space
shuttle and other rockets.
• While hydrogen fuel cells power the electrical
systems of the shuttle.
• The hydrogen fuel cell also helps in producing
pure water to shuttle crew.
Disadvantages of hydrogen energy
• It is difficult to store and transport the
liquid hydrogen through long distances.
• It requires large and thick metal
containers to store hydrogen fuel.
• It is very expensive to produce and store
hydrogen.
Hydrogen Fuel cell
fuel cells directly convert the chemical energy in hydrogen
to electricity, with pure water and heat as the only
byproducts. Hydrogen powered fuel cells are not only pollution
free, but a two to three fold increases in the efficiency can be
experienced when compared to traditional combustion
technologies
fuel cells can power almost any portable devices that normally
use batteries. Fuel cells can also power transportation such as
vehicles, trucks, buses, and marine vessels as well as provide
auxiliary powered to traditional transportation technologies.
Hydrogen can play a particular important role in future by
replacing the imported petroleum we currently use in our cars
and trucks.
The future of Hydrogen……………..
In the future, hydrogen will join electricity as an important energy
carrier, since it can be made safely from renewable energy sources and
is virtually non polluting. It will also be used as fuel for zero emission
vehicles, to heat homes and offices, to produce electricity and to fuel
aircraft.
Hydrogen has great potential as a way to reduce reliance on imported
energy sources such as oil. Before hydrogen can play a bigger energy
role and become widely used alternative to gasoline, many new
facilities and systems must be built.
