FLUTE

What is Flute?

• The Flute is a family of musical instruments in the woodwind group. Unlike

woodwind instruments with reeds , a flute is an aerophone or reedless
wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air across an
opening.
• According to the instrument classification of Hornbostel–Sachs, flutes are
categorized as edge-blown aerophones.
• A musician who plays the flute can be referred to as a flute player, flautist,
flutist or, less commonly, fluter or flutenist.
History of Flute

Theobald Boehm (1794-1881) Theobald Boehm, a Bavarian

goldsmith , Flutist , composer, and industrialist , invented the
type of Flute that became the basis for the modern instrument
a little more than a century and a half ago.
The Flute didn't always look the way it does now, it used to be
made out of wood. In 1830,Flute was made in Germany in.
The first likely Flute was called the "ch-ie" and emerged in
China. Early Flutes were played in two different positions:
vertically, like a recorder, or horizontally, in what was called the
transverse position.
The Flute is made from two pieces of tube with a constant
bore. It takes more than 150 pillars, rods, keys, rollers and
springs to make a Flute.Three pieces are taken from a length
of metal tube. The holes are cut and the metal around each
hole is pulled up to form a chimney
Why is the Flute played
sideways?
A Flute, is held to the side so that you
can rest your lower lip against the lip
plate and blow over the air hole.
When you blow into a recorder the
shape of the air stream is created by
the mouthpiece, but when you blow
into a Flute you get to create the
shape of the air stream yourself.

• Concert Flute-Woodwind instrument made of metal or wood. It is the most common
variant of the Flute. A musician who plays the Flute is called a flautist, flutist, flute
player, or (rarely) fluter. Mostly for Begginers.
• Piccolo-The piccolo is a smaller version of the Flute and plays one octave above the
C Flute.
• Eb Soprano Flute-It is pitched in E♭, a minor third above the concert Flute, and is the
only member of the modern Flute family that is not pitched in C or G.
• Alto Flute-The alto Flute is characterized by its distinct, mellow tone in the lower
portion of its range.
• Bass Flute-The bass Flute is pitched one octave below the concert flute. Because of
the length of its tube, it is usually made with a curved headjoint, which brings the
embouchure hole within reach of the player. It is usually only used in flute choirs.

How does the Flute make sound?

• The Flute is made in the form of an open

cylindrical air column about 67 cm long. Its
fundamental pitch is middle C (C4) and it
has a range of about three octaves to C7.
Sound is produced from a Flute by blowing
onto a sharp edge, causing air enclosed in a
tube to vibrate.
