MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS: ERA AND ITS CLASSIFICATION

MEDIEVAL PERIOD CHORDOPHONE  HARP

The medieval harp refers to various types of harps played
throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. The defining features
are a three-sided frame and strings made of wire or gut. The
instrument was most popular in Ireland, Scotland, England, and
Wales as well as Scandinavia.

 VIELLE
The vielle /viˈɛl/ is a European bowed stringed instrument used in the Medieval period, similar
to a modern violin but with a somewhat longer and deeper body, three to five gut strings, and a

AEROPHONE  FLUTE
A cylindrical tube musical instrument stopped at one end, with a mouth-hole and six finger
holes.

 BAGPIPES
Bagpipes are familiar to us from the Scottish tradition, among others,
and the medieval bagpipe seems to have been a similar instrument
although probably softer as a rule and with fewer drones. The sound is
produced by reeds which are set in vibration by the air pressure built up
inside an animal skin bag.

IDIOPHONE
 BELLS
A bell is a directly struck idiophone percussion instrument. Most bells have the shape of a
hollow cup that when struck vibrates in a single strong strike tone, with its sides forming an
efficient resonator. Wikipedia

RENAISSANCE PERIOD CHORDOPHONE  LUTE

Lute was the most important instrument for secular music during the
Renaissance period, relative of the guitar now a day. As a solo
instrument, fingertip plucking technique enabled it to release the
complex polyphonic style that was popular at the time.

AEROPHONE  RECORDER
The recorder is a family of woodwind musical instruments in the group
known as internal duct flutes—flutes with a whistle mouthpiece, also
known as fipple flutes. A recorder can be distinguished from other duct
flutes by the presence of a thumb-hole for the upper hand and seven
finger-holes: three for the upper hand and four for the lower.

BAROQUE PERIOD CHORDOPHONE  HARPSICORD

A harpsichord is a musical instrument played by means of a keyboard.
This activates a row of levers that turn a trigger mechanism that plucks
one or more strings with a small plectrum made from quill or plastic.

MEMBRANOPHONE  TIMPANI
Timpani were used initially just with trumpets in military ensembles and
sometimes even on horseback. That military association continued into the
baroque era with timpani seeing use with trumpets and, later, with the oboe
band of the French court. By the early 18th century, composers regularly
began to call for timpani in orchestral works, although there are a few
isolated scorings in the late 17th century as well.
