2-d echo with Doppler

Prepared by
Kurfessa, Abdisa
2D Echocardiography or 2D Echo of heart is a test in
which ultrasound technique is used to take pictures of heart.
Echocardiography uses standard two-dimensional, three-
dimensional, and Doppler ultrasound to create images of the heart.
Doppler echocardiography is a procedure that uses
Doppler ultrasonography to examine the heart. An
echocardiogram uses high frequency sound waves to create
an image of the heart while the use of Doppler technology
allows determination of the speed and direction of blood flow
by utilizing the Doppler effect
The purpose of this study is to determine the size of your heart, to
evaluate how well your heart is functioning or pumping and to
assess the structure and function of the valves within the heart. A
2-D (or two-dimensional) echocardiogram is capable of displaying
a cross-sectional “slice” of the beating heart, including the
chambers, valves and the major blood vessels that exit from the
left and right ventricle.
A Doppler echocardiogram measures the speed and direction of the
blood flow within the heart. It screens the four valves for leaks and
other abnormalities. By assigning color to the direction of blood
flow, (Color Flow Mapping), large areas of blood flow may be
studied. These color flow mappings allow abnormal blood flow
characteristics to be interpreted by the cardiologist.
Equipment

The equipment required for echocardiography includes an

echocardiography machine, a suitable transducer, and, for contrast
examinations, contrast material. Proper adjustment of the settings
on the echocardiography machine is crucial. cool ge, sound-wave transducer on
several areas of your chest.
Procedure:

● Before the test, sonographer or a nurse will explain the procedure in detail,
possible complications and side effects.
● You will be given a hospital gown to wear. You will be asked to remove
your clothing from the waist up.
● Sonographer will place three electrodes on your chest. The Sonographer
will ask you to lie on your left side. He/She will place a sound-wave
transducer on several areas of your chest. This will have a small amount
of cool gel on the end, which is not harmful to the skin.
● You may be asked to change positions and hold your breath during the
exam.
● You should feel no major discomfort during the test.
● The echo test takes about 40 minutes.
● Your physician will have access to the results and will discuss them with
you.
