E-Fest South America 2018 – Leader Experience
Its focus was to attract engineering students from universities as well as technology
enthusiasts from schools and technical courses throughout the continent. Due to lower
cost and high reach, the main source was social networks. Because of the immense
travel distances in South America, it was known that most of the attendees would be
from Rio de Janeiro. So, a lot of visits to the main universities of the city were done
(presentation in classes, leaflet giveaway, banner positioning) to have more direct
contact with this public.
The event itself consisted of a wide range of activities. The competitions consisted of the HPVC, the Old Guard Oral and
Poster Competition, the IAM3D Cad Battle and the Mecaton, an engineering challenge executed by Petrobras professionals.
Besides that, there were plenty of lectures and minicourses about different technological themes, some of the invited companies
and some of ASME staff and sponsors.
There were tours to many of UFRJ’s labs and to the CENPES, Petrobras’ huge oil and gas laboratory complex. Lastly, for the
attendants that wanted to rest or socialize, there was a lounge full of interactive games, technology, social and students’
expositions. The ticket included daily round trip buses from the city center to the university, lunch on all 3 days, the kit (t-shirt,
pen, squeeze bottle, and bag) and entrance to all activities. Some of them had a limited number of spots (such as lab visits and
minicourses) so it was required an on-site registration to attend them.
In conclusion, the event had around 600 attendants, most of them going on all three days. Unfortunately, the number of
participants of the competitions was much less than we would like, but it was expected because there weren’t such competitions in
Brazil, and it requires time and money to develop these projects. Mainly because of the student’s inexperience in organizing such
events, the organization was much more time consuming than it should and was made possible because an event organizer was
hired. Analyzing the pros and cons, the event was a success, with huge satisfaction on the organizers, participants and sponsors.

We have had contact with organizations related to some industries, such as NACE, SSPC, AMAZONIA
INDUSTRIES, SERTECPET, ENGINZONE, ASME PERU, etc; it has been possible to make
agreements with these entities in order to provide virtual training to our student community in the region on
topics concerning engineering and even soft skills. 4 webinars have been developed to date, and about 10
more are still to be developed. There has been an average presence of 30 people within these webinars and
has allowed us to generate an even wider contact network within our region.
