Objectives

– Conduct market surveys to evaluate the existing jackfruit products

and understand the scope of this market
– Dealing with the machine vendors to get the best quotes to maximize
production and minimize cost
– Preparation of detailed project report for the loan approvals with
common consensus of the farmers and ATMA
– Assist the farmers to get government approvals
– Setting up of a jackfruit processing unit in Mauxi, Valpoi
Timeline achievements

1-3 visits
During our first 3 visits we visited the ATMA office where we were
briefed about the whole project and what they expected from us
through this project. We also visited the Valpoi village to meet the
first farmer for whom we have to set up the jackfruit processing
unit and understood the problems they are facing and did the
inspection of the place where he proposed to set up the plant.
4-6 visits
In the next 3 visits we were introduced to a new farmer
based in Mauxi, where we are supposed to set up the
second processing unit. Here also we did an inspection of
the land where they proposed to set up the processing unit.
Also discussed about the various key aspects like the
sources of financing the project etc. During these visits we
also had an interactive session with other farmers who are
already into the food processing business and tried to
understand the basic requirements of such business and the
estimated cost to start such business.
7-10 visits
In next 3 visits group’s main motive was to understand the machinery
requirements and their workings to avoid ending up buying the expensive
machineries which contributes very less to the overall process. To make sure we
understand all the machineries well we paid a visit to the Krishi Vigyan Kendra
and met the project head of small-scale agricultural processing in Goa. She
guided us about the various machineries and how they work and gave the
insights that how we can cut on the cost of the project.
A meeting with ATMA officials was also arranged to know the requirements of
the DPR for the loan sanctions and to get the benefits under the Chief Minister
Rozgar Yojna and other schemes like this one.
10-14 visits
Last 4 visits were very crucial for the whole project where the group contacted the
different vendors to get the best quotes for the various machineries required for the
project and to put up all these requirements in the DPR for the loan sanctions.
Also, the group started working on the DPR and started giving it a formal structure
suggested by the ATMA officials and the NABARD guidelines. After bargaining with the
vendors and getting the best quotes the final DPR was submitted to the ATMA officials
for review and the farmers were asked about the documents requirement from their
side to apply for the loan sanctions as soon as possible. Follow ups are ongoing for the
documents that are required by the farmers and there are talks about getting loans
from ATMA to continue hassle-free and fast approval of the loan.
Strategies Used
– Field survey to know the various SKU
– Understanding the uses of various machineries to make sure the
cost cutting
– Contacting various vendors to find best alternatives of machinery
– Making farmers aware about the possible government schemes
that they can avail for finances of the production plant
– Also making them aware about the documents required for the
chosen scheme by the local government bodies
Operational Issues
– Lack of understanding of machinery and layout of machinery on
farmers and client’s side
– Lead time of machineries is 45-60 days depending on
specifications and size of machines
– Farmers not well communicated about the schemes available and
documents required from the client’s side
– Plant blue print not available yet
Fire Fighting Experiences
#1
– Lack of knowledge in the field of food processing, lead to some technical
problems initially but we tried to learn about these machineries well
– For this we even visited the ICRA and saw the model production plant and old
machineries of Jackfruit processing
#2
– We were not able to meet the vendors personally to ensure quality machines
but still we managed to get the best vendor after consultation with ICRA and
our client.
– We eventually approached Sagar Engineering Works which quoted optimum
machinery prices from the vendors, in order to reduce the overall cost for
loan sanction and hence reducing the pressure on farmers
#3
– Our GiveGoa group consisted of members coming together from diverse
backgrounds with different working styles due to which there were some
conflicts among the group members about how the project should be
approached and the right course of action at certain crossroads
– We resolved this by redefining our objectives which was, by consensus, the
betterment of the farmers and then approaching the problems keeping that
in mind
– This helped us to keep our personal problems aside and sometimes
accommodate and compromise with each other over certain conflicts
Conclusion

– Till now we’ve managed to understand and evaluate the needs of the
farmers to understand their objectives and have aligned it with the
objectives of ATMA
– The farmers were advised and guided as to which equipment and
machineries were essential for the initial set-up
– A detailed project report has been successfully handed over to the client
and is being processed for the loan at EDC, Canara bank and CMRY
– The farmers have been informed about the required approvals from local
government bodies
