Security is a risk management process that encourages individuals to view media operations from the perspective of an adversary in order to protect sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands. What constitutes media?
Media is not limited to social media platforms. Emails, texts
and phone calls are all considered media platforms. Think before you post, text, call or write. Posts, phone calls, texts, and emails should never contain sensitive information. Civilian life is very different from military life. There is an understanding of safe guards. However, friends, families and loved ones with ties to members of the armed forces need to be diligent when it comes to their media output. What is off limits?
When it comes to sharing information,
there are few key points to remember. Never share the following: Names Locations Details of deployments or returns Arrival/departure travel information Count downs Seems drastic?
The safety of soldiers is top priority. So much so, that entire
Companies have been rerouted by bus instead of plane due to travel information being shared on social media. The change in transportation causes unnecessary delays, and pushes arrival times back by days instead of hours. Those needless changes can be avoided by using discretion with media. References
