Problem/Need Statement
EDAE-639-801
By Rebecca Myers
What is Operational Security?

Operational Security (OPSEC) or Procedural

Security is a risk management process that
encourages individuals to view media
operations from the perspective of an
adversary in order to protect sensitive
information from falling into the wrong
hands.
What constitutes media?

Media is not limited to social media platforms. Emails, texts

and phone calls are all considered media platforms. Think
before you post, text, call or write. Posts, phone calls, texts,
and emails should never contain sensitive information.
Civilian life is very different from military life. There is an
understanding of safe guards. However, friends, families and
loved ones with ties to members of the armed forces need to be
diligent when it comes to their media output.
What is off limits?

When it comes to sharing information,

there are few key points to remember.
Never share the following:
 Names
 Locations
 Details of deployments or returns
 Arrival/departure travel information
 Count downs
Seems drastic?

The safety of soldiers is top priority. So much so, that entire

Companies have been rerouted by bus instead of plane
due to travel information being shared on social media. The
change in transportation causes unnecessary delays, and
pushes arrival times back by days instead of hours. Those
needless changes can be avoided by using discretion with
media.
