• Fatigue is defined as “a state of impaired
mental and/or phsyical peformance and
lowered alertness, arising as result or
combination of hard physical and mental work,
health and psycosocial factors, or inadequate
restorative sleep

• Fatigue is more than feeling tired and drowsy.


In a work context, fatigue is mental and/or
physical exhaustion that reduces your ability to
perform your work safely and effectively.

How is Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome Treated?
The principles of management for CFS are outlined
below:
1. Planned, gradual return to physical activity – A
mutually agreed and supervised programme of
gradually increasing activity.
2. Identification and treatment of maintaining
factors – Address dysfunctional beliefs and
behaviours and treat mood and sleep
disorders.
3. Communication involving explanation of ill-
health, including diagnosis and causes, and
education about management (including self-
help leaflets)
4. Stop drugs (e.g. caffeine causing insomnia,
analgesics causing dependance)
5. Rehabilitation – Including cognitive
behavioural therapy (to challenge unhelpful
beliefs and change coping strategies) and
supervised and graded exercise therapy (to
reduce inactivity and improve fitness)
6. Medications (e.g. antidepressants for mood
disorders; analgesics; and sleep disturbance
and symptomatic medicines)
