Importance of Energy conservation

Energy Saving With the present situation of energy crisis, fossil fuels (coal, oil & natural gas) potential is unable to meet the current energy
demands and as we know that energy is the life line of growth in any economy that’s why energy saving is very important. Our country’s per capita
energy consumption is 325.1 million tones oil equivalent which is very low as compared to the industrialized countries but the energy intensity is
very high.
We can easily narrow the gap between demand & supply and decrease the energy intensity in each sector by simple approach towards energy
conservation and efficiency through energy efficient technology and housekeeping habits.
In India major energy intensive sectors which are as follows having an average potential of 20 – 25% of energy savings. The sector wise saving
potential would be Industrial (up to 25 %); Agriculture Sector (up to 30 %); Transport, Domestic Commercial and Municipal Sector (<20 %)

We use energy faster than it can be produced - Coal, oil and natural gas - the most utilised sources take thousands of years for formation.
Energy resources are limited - India has approximately 1% of world’s energy resources but it has 16% of world population.
Most of the energy sources we use cannot be reused and renewed - Non renewable energy sources constitute 80% of the fuel use. It is said that
our energy resources may last only for another 40 years or so.
We save the country a lot of money when we save energy - About 75 per cent of our crude oil needs are met from imports which would cost
about Rs.1, 50,000 crore a year
We save our money when we save energy - Imagine your savings if your LPG cylinder comes for an extra week or there is a cut in your
electricity bills
We save our energy when we save energy - When we use fuel wood efficiently, our fuel wood requirements are lower and so is our drudgery for
its collection
Energy saved is energy generated - When we save one unit of energy, it is equivalent to 2 units of energy produced
Save energy to reduce pollution - Energy production and use account to large proportion of air pollution and more than 83 percent of greenhouse
gas emissions

Energy savings can be done by each sector in the following manner

Sl. No. Sector Stakeholders Energy savings steps

•Top management policy

•Energy management cell
Owner Workers i.e.,
•Energy manager in the company
Officers etc.
1 Industrial sector •Energy audit done by accredited energy auditor
Bankers Lenders
•Use of std machines & tools
Consultants Customers
•Using modern & energy efficient technologies
•Customer should be aware about of norms & standards of the product

•Using Standard fuel efficient pump sets

Farmers Bankers
•Through Public awareness
2 Agriculture sector Lenders All CEBs,
•Proper installation of pump system
SEBs
•Strictly following the norms & standards for each equipment

•Use of energy efficient technologies with strict following of norms & std.
Central government •Fuel-mix
3 Transport sector State government •Ethanol blending
Consultant Public •Strict following of Environment standards with regular check up of the
vehicle

Central government •Use of renewable like solar, wind etc.

Domestic & Commercial State government Consultant, •No meter tempering
4
sector Lenders Bankers, •Correct power factor
Public •Use of efficient technologies like CFLs etc.

Central government •Strict follow up of norms & standards

5 Municipal sector State governmentConsultant •Use of efficient technology
Public •Through public awareness

Residential Zone and Housing

The Residential Sector consumes about 10 % of country's energy usage and there is a potential for saving 27-42% of energy by switching to improved
devices, which are designed to maximise combustion rate (of fuel, ensuring the presence of sufficient oxygen), radiant heat transfer (from fire to vessels,
keeping them as close to fire as possible), convection (to pass maximum hot gas over vessels, reducing drafts), conduction (heat is concentrated near
the vessels by using insulating material for the stove) and user satisfaction (with user friendly design). Irrespective of type of fuel, community, etc.,
improved stoves show significant saving in fuel. We can come over the problem with the
practice of energy efficient technology and through energy conservation.

Some of the measures:

•Turn off lighting system in any room if not using
•Fuel-efficient equipment/appliances such as kerosene and LPG stoves,
•Use of compact fluorescent lamps in place of GL lamps
•Use of electronic ballasts saves about 20 % to 25 % of energy
•Use of energy efficient 28W tube lights saves about 40 % of energy as compared to the conventional 40W tube light.
•Use of solar light for lighting purpose during day time
•Pumps for lifting water in high-rise buildings
•On electric stoves, use flat bottom pans that make full contact with the element
•Use of Fuel efficient stoves, popularly known as ASTRA stoves, are characterized by complete fuel combustion with as little excess air as practicable
• to generate the highest
•temperature of flue gases
