Introduction

 This method calculates a fair estimate of the average
precipitation.

 Attempts to allow for non-uniform distribution of

gauges by providing a weighting factor for each
gauge.
Procedure

 Divide the region into sub-regions centered about
each rain gauge.
 Each polygon area is assumed to be influenced by
the rain gauge station inside it.
 Determine the area of each sub-region (Ai) and
compute sub-region weightings (Wi) using:
Wi = Ai/A.
 Compute total areal rainfall using:
𝑷 = 𝚺𝑾𝒊𝑷𝒊
Procedure

 We will find the average precipitation of the region
comprising of the following areas with rain gauge
readings using QGIS:

 Mardan Irrigation Department: 100.40mm

 Forest Institute Peshawar: 466.30mm
 Kohat Station: 625.80mm
 Mir Adam Banda Dam, Karak: 331.72mm
Using Open Layers Plugin, Locate the Gauge
Station

Edit the attributes table and add the
precipitation Values

Join the stations by line

Draw an area encompassing all the stations

Bisect the lines joining the stations

Calculate the areas of the sub-regions covered
by each gauge stations

Finding Average Precipitation

 From Theissen Method, Using Equation:
𝑷 = 𝚺𝑾𝒊𝑷𝒊

𝟑𝟒𝟗𝟔.𝟕𝟗𝟔∗𝟒𝟔𝟔.𝟑 𝟐𝟏𝟓𝟎.𝟓𝟕𝟓∗𝟏𝟎𝟎.𝟒 𝟏𝟎𝟓𝟖.𝟐𝟎𝟗∗𝟑𝟑𝟏.𝟕𝟐

P= + + +
𝟗𝟔𝟖𝟖.𝟎𝟏𝟗 𝟗𝟔𝟖𝟖.𝟎𝟏𝟗 𝟗𝟔𝟖𝟖.𝟎𝟏𝟗
𝟐𝟗𝟖𝟐.𝟒𝟑𝟗∗𝟔𝟐𝟓.𝟖
𝟗𝟔𝟖𝟖.𝟎𝟏𝟗

 P = 419.478mm Answer
