Basic Information:
- Strategic Location:
- Located along the east coast of India in the state of Odisha,
Gopalpur.
- Situated between Paradip and Visakhapatnam port, Gopalpur offers
excellent rail and road connectivity.
- 6 km away from Gopalpur port site.
- Close proximity to NH5 (Kolkata-Chennai) and State Highway No 7 and 17
provide excellent road connectivity to and from Gopalpur.
- Contextual advantages of Location:
- Proximity to bauxite rich areas of Sundargarh, Balangir, Sambalpur,
Kalahandi and steel clusters of central Odisha, offers a sizable advantage
to Gopalpur.
- Mineral rich areas of Angul, Dhenkanal, Jharsguda, Sambalpur and
Raigarh (Chhattisgarh) form a natural hinterland for Gopalpur.
- The coal fields of IB and Talcher, which account for approximately 25% of
India’s coal reserves and 100% of Odisha’s coal reserves (source MCL) too
form part of hinterland for the port.
- Rail Connectivity
Gopalpur Port’s excellent rail connectivity is due to its own railway siding
which is only 6 km from the Howrah-Visakhapatnam-Chennai broad gauge
railway line.
Basic Information:
- Road connectivity
- NH-5 (Kolkata-Chennai) is at a distance of about 6km from Gopalpur Port
site. This highway is well connected with State Highway 7 and 17. –
Government has also announced a National Highway from Gopalpur to
Raipur in Chhattisgarh, which will boost the road access further.
- Air connectivity
- The nearest airport is the Biju Patnaik Airport in Bhubaneshwar, is at a
distance of 138 km from Gopalpur port.

Port Profile:
- Gopalpur shares its hinterland with Paradip Port in north and
Visakhapatnam Port in the south. This gives it access to an excellent mix of
large scaled steel, power and cement industries.
- At present Gopalpur has one berth with a length of 225m and depth of 12.5
meters.
- By end of December 2016, it will have total three berths of 300m each. It is
planned to have installation of state-of-the-art material handling equipment
at berths to achieve one of the highest loading rates in India. The port aims
to achieve handling rates of 40,000 TPD for coal and 60,000 TPD for iron ore.
- Gopalpur had received 393 acres of land from government of Odisha while
another 1200 acres is in process of handover for future development.
Currently there are 10 covered go-downs with an area of 11000 sqm and
more covered areas could be developed as the port has more than 200,000
sqm of paved open space available.
- The port currently provides efficient cargo handling through state of art
infrastructure.
Infrastructure:
State of the art material handling equipment which includes but is not limited
to loaders, grab unloaders, mobile harbor cranes and conveyors is installed
at the port. This will enable the port to achieve the highest loading rates in
India. Handling rates of 40,000 TDP for coal and 60,000 TDP for iron ore is
expected to be achievable in the near future. Currently the port has 10
covered go-downs with an area of 11000 sqm and more than 200,000 sqm of
paved open space is available for storage. A 100MT Manitowoc Yard crane
is also available at the port..
BERTH DETAILS
One berth with an overall length of 225 meters with a depth of 12.5 meters
Development of another 2 berths with a length of 300 meters each will give
900 meters of berth length in total by December 2016
Presently transshipment operations can be executed in the inner basin of
Panamax and post-panamax vessels
LOADING & UNLOADING FACILITIES
The port possess adequate heavy equipment such as material handlers, pay
loaders, heavy lie cranes, fork lies, and trailers and tippers for swift cargo
handling operations. By March 2016, Gopalpur port will have 2 harbor mobile
cranes to handle cargo loading/unloading operations.
