TOPIC: Rawsonville Capability Study in Minitab

Cp = Looks at the spread of the data versus the TOLERANCE (not upper or lower, just tolerance)
Cpk = Looks at the spread versus the Upper and Lower Tolerance Limits (chooses lower of two numbers)

1) Enter data for capability study into Minitab. Extra columns for more information (for example,
date of data point, notes, etc can be added as well but are not part of the study.)
NOTE: Data pulled should be between 1 week and 1 month of data for a long term study

2) When all data is entered, run the capability Sixpack Chart as shown in the drop down menu below.
STAT -> Quality Tools -> Capability Sixpack -> Normal

3) When running capability study, make sure you do the following:

a) Click in the “Single Column” box and choose the column with your data
b) Choose a Subgroup Size (must enter a number – use 1 if no subgroups)
a) Group data where possible (parts from the same lot count as a group)
c) Enter in the Upper and Lower Spec for your study (if a one-sided spec, only enter that number)

4) Go to “Options” Screen and enter a title for the slide (include department, Operation, Gage
Name/Number, and Date at a minimum. Click on “OK” once all information has been entered.

5) Click on OK from the Capability Sixpack main screen to run the capability study.

6) Use the Ppk Number from the lower right side of this chart as the capability number. Follow PTP07-
143 for guidelines on what the requirements are for gage capability.
General requirements: Log term study (Ppk) must be >= 1.33
Short term study (Cpk) and new lines must be >= 1.67

IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING CAPABILITY: The capability study is not valid unless all of the
following criteria are met (see orange numbers in above chart to show where to look). Note that this
study fails all three criteria to better show what to look for.

1) Data must be STABLE and IN CONTROL (no points in the range chart out of control limits)
2) Data must be NORMAL (in the 6-pack chart, the Normality test must have P>= 0.05)
3) Flyers in the data must be identified for what they are (tool broken, special causes) before
removing
