Emergency sliding booms made of galvanized iron piping are installed on both sides of level crossings in addition to electric lifting barriers. The booms are manually operated to block the level crossing when the electric barrier is damaged. One boom is locked in place using an 'E' type lock with a yellow key, which then releases a red key to lock the second boom. Both yellow keys are then inserted into a triple key box, releasing a third key that is used to electrically close the level crossing and activate the level crossing proving relay to prove that the crossing is secure to the signalman.
