 Nursing in KSA

The nursing profession has traditionally had a good reputation in Islam; it was
mentioned for the first time during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon
him) when it served the Muslim armies during periods of war. [6] However, despite its
long existence in the Saudi community and its respected history in Islam, nursing today
is not viewed positively in Saudi culture.

The government's efforts to attract and retain more Saudis in the nursing profession
encounter obstacles such as unappealing working conditions, limited options for
balancing work and family responsibilities, and the perception of the role of nursing
and the poor image attached to it.

The main reasons for not choosing nursing as a profession among Saudi women are to
do with cultural values, family disagreement, gender desegregation, the low image of
nursing and the night shift. [7] It is, thus, not generally viewed as a suitable profession
for women.
 Expatriate nurses

 Ex-patriate nurses, recruited from over 52 countries.

 Differences in religion, culture, social values and language can create barriers
between expatriate nurses and local patients.
 [7] Expatriate nurses are typically women who come to Saudi for financial,
professional or personal reasons (including Muslims hoping to perform the Haj).
 Typically offered a single contract, most of them are, thus, unaccompanied by
partner or family.

All nursing staff members have to be registered with the Saudi Commission for
Health Specialties.
 Getting Your Saudi Professional License

Licensing in Saudi Arabia is acquired through the Saudi Commission for Health
Specialties (SCFHS). We initiate the SCFHS licensing process for our
candidates before relocation.
If the process sounds overwhelming, rest assured that we handle all of the
behind-the-scenes minutiae of the process. You just have to send us your
many documents and we take it from there.
Licensing is a four-step process, as follows:
Step 1: Dataflow
Step 2: Professional Classification and Licensing Exam:
Step 3: Professional Classification Certificate
Step 4: Professional Registration
 Dataflow

Step 1: Dataflow
1. DataFlow is a third party company used by the SCFHS to verify your
education, professional license (e.g., RN, MD), and employment
documents.
2. upload all of your documents to Dataflow and pay the DataFlow application
fee. The process can take up to two months to complete
3. Once your DataFlow verification report has been issued, you can then
proceed to Step 2.
 Step 2: Professional Classification and Licensing Exam

1. MumarisPlus is the SCFHS online application system into which we enter

all your documents (educational, passport, professional license,
employment letters, etc.) The SCFHS will then review your application to
determine your eligibility for licensing Saudi Arabia.
2. If you are deemed "eligible for licensing," you will be issued an "Eligibility
Number" which allows you to register for the licensing exam.

3. Everyone must write the Prometric or Pearson VUE licensing exam before
relocation. The fee for the nursing Prometric exam is US$239.
 Step 3: Professional Classification Certificate

Once you have passed the licensing exam, the SCFHS will complete a final
review of your application. Once approved, you will be issued a Professional
Classification Certificate.
 4: Professional Registration

The registration process is completed when you arrive in Saudi Arabia.

 Can I bring my family?

Only management and administrative staff (e.g., Director/Head of a Clinical or Non-Clinical

Department) provide married-status contracts, which offer coverage for family members for
travel, health benefits, etc.

On a single-status contract, accommodations, air tickets, and medical coverage are provided for
the employee only
I have friends and family who would like to visit me. How can I obtain
visas for them?

You will be allowed to sponsor only close family members (e.g., spouse,
children, parents, and siblings).
You are responsible for all costs associated with their visit (e.g., visa, flight,
accommodations). You are not able to sponsor friends and extended family
members.
Is it correct that I need an "exit visa" to leave Saudi Arabia for vacation, etc.?
Yes. Your final exit visa will be handled by the hospital. But for vacation
purposes, you will need an exit/re-entry visa. A single exit/re-entry visa costs
approximately SR200 (US$53) and is valid for a single trip out of the country. A
multiple exit/re-entry costs approximately SR500 ($133) and is good for
unlimited trips for six months.
 Lifestyle and Day-to-Day Living

What religions are practiced in Saudi Arabia?

Islam is the official religion of Saudi Arabia. Prayer call occurs five times per
day and during this period, shops and restaurants close for about 20 minutes to
allow workers to pray. Many expatriates living in Riyadh are from Muslim
countries. Although there are also many non-Muslim expatriates (e.g.,
Christians, Hindus), there are no churches or houses of worship of other faiths
in the Kingdom
 How should I dress when I am in Saudi Arabia?

For men, all clothing worn in public areas (e.g., outside the hospital grounds
and housing complexes) should be conservative. This means no sleeveless
shirts, no shorts, etc., in public (sportswear can be worn at men-only fitness
facilities) and in private areas. In public areas, jewelry should be limited to a
wedding ring and a watch.
Women are required to wear an abaya (a black, lightweight cloak that drapes
over your clothing) and to carry a scarf that can be used to cover the hair (if
required) when in public areas (e.g., malls, souqs). The scarf and abaya are
usually sold as a set; they must be black, but can have coloured embroidery,
applique, etc. on them. Women are not required to veil. Abayas (and scarves)
can be purchased online, and can be bought throughout Saudi Arabia. This
doesn't mean that you can't work out or go to the beach. And at home, you can
wear whatever you wish. And under your abaya you can wear whatever you
wish.
 Will I be safe in Saudi Arabia?

There is relatively little crime in Saudi Arabia. The level of violence is far less
than one would find in a city of comparable size in the United States or
Canada, and the security level is high. We are in regular contact with
Westerners, and generally, Western people say they feel safe.

Should I register with my country's embassy or consulate in Saudi Arabia?

When traveling abroad one should always register with one's embassy or
consulate. Riyadh is home to all of the government ministries and foreign
embassies, including those of the United States and Canada. Jeddah is the
site of many consulates, including those of the United States and Canada. You
can also register in advance of going overseas.
