POLITICAL SELF?
Politics

 Derived from Greek word “politika”, which is etymologically defined as


“affairs of cities”
 Process of making decisions that applies to all members of a group
 The ability to govern and control over a group people in community, state
or nation
 Can be inferred from this new that a person’s ability to influence others
by making a decision from them is one of the essential qualities in one’s
political self
 Important aspects is the capacity to influence and lead a group of people
What is political Self?
 The Political Self explores how social and economic contexts
profoundly affect the mental health an well – being of a
person.
 Refers to a representation of oneself about him/herself

social organization
 Is the subdivision of the self that helps an individual navigate
the tension between the competing needs for assimilation and
differentiation in the political domain.
The Social Influence ( by Deutch and
Gerard, 1955)

positive expectations of others, people tend avoid
behaving in ways that will lead to social punishment or
disapproval.
 2. Informative Influence – based on accepting the
information obtained from others as evidence of reality
(Hewstone, et al 2015)

 Leadership styles – patterns of leadership behavior which
is repeatedly shown as evident across a variety of
situations.
 Classifications:
 A.) autocratic Leadership – directive, non- participative
and domineering.
 B.) Democratic Leadership – participative, communicative
and egalitarian.
 C.) Laissez – faire Leadership – hands – off leadership with
few attempts made to influence others
Leaders Description:
 A. Transactional Leaders- focus on the proper exchange of
resources, who gives followers something in exchange for
something the leaders want.
 B. Transformantional Leaders- a.k.a. charismatic, focus on
aligning the group or organizational goals with followers
need and aspiration by developing an appealing vision.
 Laissez-faire Leaders- engage in non-leadership , they
avoid making decisions, hesitate in taking action and
often absent when needed.
OPEN SPACE TECHNOLOGY (OTS)
– an approach to purpose drive leadership
which initially has no formal agenda but
eventually leads to a specific or important
purpose or task.
PRINCIPLES OF OTS:
 1. WHOEVER COMES ARE THE RIGHT PEOPLE
 2. WHATEVER HAPPENS IS THE ONLY THING THAT COULD
HAPPENED
 3. WHENEVER IT STARTS IS THE RIGHT TIME.

and sneaky. This is increasingly becoming an old fashioned view.
Organizational Politics

 Is a natural part of life within organization.


 When people think of organizational or office politics,
they often think of someone with a big ego arguing
their opponents into submission.
 However , people who quietly succeed in their careers
are not unpolitical, they just do it better.
Developing Political Awareness in your
Organizational or groups
 Tip 1- be guided by what is important, write down your top three priorities
for the organization.
 Tip 2 – build a network, when building your network of allies, look to build
allies above your level, at your level, below your level and even outside of
your organization.
 Tip 3 watch and learn, observing and trying to answer these questions can
not only help you identify who could make a strong ally but it also help you
determine the organizational culture .
 Tip 4 handle gossip tactfully, don’t get sucked in other people gossip.
 Tip 5 promote your self tactfully, one way to do this is to practice the subtle
art of show but don’t tell. This comes from creative writing, where rather
than tell someone how it is , you show them.o9
Origin of Political Self
 The family has a Hierarchical structure which requires each member to
perform his or her role. Each position carries a set of rights responsibilities
and expectations. Through Hierarchy of positions, status and power are as
cribbed. The family consists of members who differ in status, obligations,
influence or power.
