Sustainability
• what does that mean?
– Taking care of tomorrow today.

…did the previous generation think about the

consequences of their existence for future…

• what do we have better / worse than our parent?

Sustainability
• what do we NEED for
life?

If the whole population consumed like the USA or Europe

we would need 4,5 worlds to meet the demand

Where does waste disappear?
Landfills
• about 178 landfills in CZ
• almost 50% of municipal
waste
• expensive management
– toxicity to ground water systems
– water and gas filtration
– tax
The “invisible” waste
• Ecological footprint
– time count of raw material needed
+ time count of disposal of waste
• Carbon footprint
– emission amount count
• Water footprint
– consumer water count

• ? loss of biodiversity ?
• ? quality of soil ?
• ? chemical pollution ?
• ? loss of eco-systemic services ?
There is no such thing as waste in nature

waste = resource
Circular economy = Zero Waste
Circular economy
Circular economy

closing loops waste = resource

Circular Economy - Examples
Sierra Nevada Brewery

“waste diversion program diverts 99.8% of solid waste from

the landfill. By following the mantra of “reduce, reuse, recycle,
and reEarth (compost)” and integrating the closed loop
philosophy, we hope to drive this number even closer to 100%.”

 improves our personal health

 the health of our communities because we have clean air and
water

 save money by reducing the cost of utilities and resources.

100% of-grid renewable energy sources
Water use efficiency

• Every gallon of water consumed passes through multiple pumps, filters,

and motors before it gets to the brewery = Every drop of water
consumed is money saved.
• Waste water treatment energy is used to power the facility
• Since 2007, 25% reduction in amount of water to produce 1 barrel of
beer
Transportation

• built a rail line 2 miles from the Chico brewery to transport malted
barley to Chico instead of trucking it.
• Each rail car contains three to four truckloads of malt
• more efficient and cost efective than traditional truck transport.

• Logistics: Never empty trucks, always picking up materials along the

routes
Spelt grain = bread or cattle feed for the restaurant
Composter on site

• In 2014, the HotRot converted

143 tons of food waste,

• 116 tons of hops and 48 tons

of spent grain into compost
nutritious amendment for our
onsite organic restaurant
garden, hop field, and barley
field.

-Liam only works for iphone 6

-Only 2 Liam systems exist, capable of dismantling 2.4 million
iphones per year
-Apple sold 10 million iphones in the first weekend the iphone
6 was released (over 1 billion Apple products worldwide)
OK, so why are we not yet here?
Who can solve the problems?
Government power to lead towards sustainability

Legislation level example:

On February 21, 2017, the French National Assembly adopted proposed legislation
defining a duty of vigilance for parent companies and their subcontractors.
