APPROACHES

AND ENTRANCES
INTRODUCTION
Before passing through the interior of a building, we have to
approach its entrance along a path.

FIRST PHASE OF THE CIRCULATION SYSTEM – preparing us to see,

experience, and use the spaces within a building.

APPROACH
There are 4 types of Approaches:
▪ Frontal
▪ Oblique
▪ Spiral
▪ Portals & Gateways

6
Frontal.
 Leads directly to the entrance
 Straight, axial path
 Visual goal that terminates the approach is
clear
 Visual goal

7
Frontal. Oblique.
 Enhances the effect of perspective
 Path can be redirected to PROLONG or
DELAY the sequence
 If approach is at an extreme angle, extreme
can project to be visible

8
9
Frontal. Oblique. Spiral.
 Prolongs the sequence of the approach
 Emphasizes the 3D form of a building
 Building entrance may be viewed or be
hidden until reached

Portals & Gateways.
 Traditionally been means of ordering us to
the path beyond and welcoming our entry

ENTRANCE
ENTRANCE
Entering a vertical plane that helps us
distinguish where one space separates from
another.

13
ENTRANCE
Walls are used to define
and enclose a space,
while entrances are used
for an opening in the
plane of the wall.
