DEFINITION OF TERMS
8 BASIC KNOTS

• The Bowline – Used to make a


fixed line at the end of the rope

• The Square Knot – Used to


secure a rope around an
objector another rope.

• Two Half Hitches– Used to


fasten a rope temporarily to a
post, hook, or ring.

• Sheet Bend– Joining two
ropes of different diameters

• Taut-line Hitch– an adjustable
loop knot for use on lines
under tension.

• Clove Hitch– two successive
half-hitches around an object.
It is most effectively used as a
crossing knot.

• Timber Hitch– Used to attach a
rope to a log. This knot
tightens under strain

purpose stopper knot.
