The Hotel Barge (ft. penuche hotel)
came into being following the
decline in commercial and freight
carrying on the canals of Europe.
Many working barges have been
converted into floating hotels of
varying degrees of luxury. This
trend began in the 1960s and has
now grown into a network of hotel
barges have been converted into
floating hotels of varying degrees of
luxury.
A Botel is a boat that serves as
a hotel or hostel. The word is a
portmanteau of boat and hotel.
Botels may range from small or
larger purpose – built or
converted boats or other
watercrafts, to converted ships.
They may be permanently
moored or grounded, or spend
part of the year taking guests
on tours.
Boutique Hotels began
appearing in the 1980s in
major cities like Paris,
London, New York, and
San Francisco. The term
was coined by Steve Rubell
in 1984 when he compared
the Morgans Hotel, the
first hotel he and Ian
Schrager owned, to a
boutique.
A Bunkhouse is a barracks- like
building that historically was
used to house working cowboys
on ranches in North America. As
most cowboys were young single
men, the standard bunkhouse
was a large open room with
narroe beds or cots for each
individual and little privacy. The
bunkhouse of the late 19th
century was usually heated by a
wood stove and personal needs
were attended to in an outhouse.
A Capsule Hotel (Kapuseru
Hoteru), also known as a Pod
Hotel, is a type of hotel
developed in Japan that
features a large number of
extremely small “rooms”
(capsules) intended to provide
cheap, basic overnight
accommodation for guests who
do not require or who cannot
afford the services offered by
more conventional hotels.
A Caravanserai was a
roadside inn where travelers
(caravaners) could rest and
recover from the day’s
journey. Caravanserais
supported the flow of
commerce, information and
people across the network of
trade routes covering Asia,
North Africa and Southeast
Europe, especially along the
Silk Road.
Casa Particular (Spanish for
“private house”; plural Casas
Particulares) is a phrase
meaning private
accommodation or private
homestays in Cuba, very
similar to bed and breakfast,
although it can also take the
form of vacation rental. When
the meaning is clear the term
is often shortened to simply
casa.
A Casino Hotel is an
establishment consisting of a
Casino with temporary
lodging provided in an on-
premises hotel. Customers
receive the benefits of both
gambling facilities and
lodging. Since the casino and
hotel are located on the same
premises, all the gambler’s
necessities can be provided in
one location.
Condo Hotels are typically high-
rise buildings developed and
operated as luxury hotels, usually
in major cities and resorts. These
hotels have condominium units
which allow someone to own a
full-service vacation home. When
they are not using this home, they
can leverage the marketing and
management done by the hotel
chain to rent and manage the
condo unit as it would any other
hotel room.
A Guest House (also guesthouse)
is a kind of lodging. In some parts
of the world ( such as for example
the Caribbean), guest houses are
a type of inexpensive hotel-like
lodging. In still other, it is a
private home which has been
converted for the exclusive use of
guest accommodation. The owner
usually lives in an entirely
separate area within the property
and the guest house may serve as
a form of lodging business.
A Holiday Cottage, Holiday Home,
or Vacation Property is
accommodation used for holiday
vacations. Such properties are
typically small homes, such as
cottages, that vacationers can rent
and run as if it were their own
home for the duration of their stay.
The properties may be owned by
those using them for a vacation, in
which case the term second home
applies; or may be rented out to
holiday makers through an agency.
Hostels provide budget-
oriented, sociable
accommodation where
guests can rent a bed,
usually a bunk bed, in a
dormitory and share a
bathroom, lounge and
sometimes a kitchen. Rooms
can be mixed or single-sex,
and private rooms may also
be available.
An Ice Hotel is a temporary hotel
made up of snow and sculpted
blocks of ice. Ice Hotels are
dependent on sub-freezing
temperatures, are constructed
from ice and snow and typically
have to be rebuilt every year. Ice
hotels exist in several countries,
and they have varying
construction styles, services and
amenities, the latter of which may
include Ice bars, restaurants,
chapels, saunas and hot tubs.
Inns are generally
establishments or buildings
where travelers can seek
lodging and, usually, food and
drink. They are typically
located in the country or
along a highway; before the
advent of motorized
transportation they also
provided accommodation for
horses.
A Love Hotel is a type of
short- stay hotel found
around the world operated
primarily for the purpose
of allowing guests privacy
for sexual activities. The
name originates from
“Hotel Love” in Osaka,
which was built in 1968
and had a rotating sign.
A Motel is a hotel designed for
motorists and usually has a
parking area for motor
vehicles. Entering dictionaries
after World War II, the word
Motel, coined as a portmanteau
contraction of “motor hotel”,
originates from the Milestone
Mo-Tel of San Luis Obispo,
California (now called the
Motel inn of San Luis Obispo),
which was built in 1925.
In town, tourist homes were
private residences advertising
rooms for auto travelers. Unlike
boarding houses, guests at tourist
homes were usually just passing
through. In the Southwestern
United States, a handful of
tourists homes were opened by
African-Americans as early as
the Great Depression due to the
lack of food or lodging for
travelers of color in the Jim Crow
conditions of the era.
A Pension is a type of guest
house or boarding house. This
term is typically used in
Continental European
countries, in areas of North
Africa and the Middle East that
formerly had large European
expatriate populations, and in
some parts of South America
such as Brazil and Paraguay.
Pensions can also be found in
South Korea, Japan and the
Philippines.
Pentahotels is an international
lifestyle hotel brand, and a
member of Rosewood Hotel
Group, the Hong kong based
International hotel management
company. Operating properties in
7 markets across Europe and Asia,
the brand was established in 1971
as Penta Hotels as a joint venture
between Lufthansa, Swissair,
Alitalia, British Overseas Airways
Corporation (predecessors of
British Airways), and British
European Airlines.
A Roadhouse (US) or Stopping
House (Canada) is a
commercial establishment
typically built on or near a
major road or highway that
services passing travellers. The
world’s meaning varies slightly
by country. The historical

horses.
A Ryokan is a type of traditional
Japanese inn that has existed since the
eighth century A.D. during the Keiun
period, in which the oldest hotel in the
world, Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan, was
created in 705 A.D. Another old ryokan
called Hōshi Ryokan was founded in
718 A.D and was also known as the
world’s second oldest hotel. Such inns
also served travelers along Japan’s
highways. They typically feature tatami
matted rooms, communal baths and
other public areas where visitors may
wear yukata and talk with the owner.
River cruisers are used as hotelships
for a limited time and intermittently.
Whereas a hotel has a fixed address
and is used permanently, hotelships
are only in any one location for a
defined duration. Ship owners and
shipping companies are particularly
keen on this use of river cruiser as,
unlike in the case of deep sea cruise
ships, there is no seasonal transfer of
ships to warmer areas. The result is
therefore more efficient use of the
ships outside the main cruising
season.
A Turbaza is a generally Sovient-
era, Russian form of inexpensive,
holiday accommodation – a tour
camp or tourbase. Turbazas are
commonly leased out to groups or
firm renting the entire facility to
provide holiday accommodation
for their members or employees.
They are generally rustic, located
in rural areas that offer outdoor
recreation. Dining, and often
sleeping, is accommodation in a
large, open common area.
