A person in this group cannot be


replaced by another person.
Family relationship are the most
important.
Family relationships are very
intimate and private.

 Characterized by intimate face to face


association and cooperation.
 Involve sort of sympathy and mutual identification
for which “we” is the natural expression.
 Consist of small face to face structures such as
family and friendship groups where personalities
fuse into a common whole.
PRIMARY GROUP
 Initial
group that a person joins and provide him
or her with experiences in social relations.
 Called nursery of human nature because this
group shaped out personality and developed our
self concept.
 An individual acquired ideas and expression of
love, affection, sympathy and kindness, loyalty
and justice.

SECONDARY GROUP

Interaction among the members are


business-like, impersonal, casual and
contractual.
This relationship involves a reaction to
only a part of the individual’s personality.

Tend to be casual, temporary


and limited in personal
involvement.
The individual can be easily
replaced by anyone who can
carry out the same function.
SECONDARY GROUP

 The focus is on its goal rather than on personal


relationships that characterize primary and local
groups.
 Contacts may be face-to-face, indirect or
transitory.
 Relationships are important only to facilitate the
realization of one’s end or objectives.
SECONDARY GROUP

There is no sense of loyalty and


no sense of belongingness.
