1. WHAT COMPRISES THE SEVEN AGES OF
MAN ACCORDING TO THE POEM?

It is comprised of the following:

 Child or infant

 School Boy

 Lover

 Soldier

 Justice

 Pantaloon

 Second childishness and mere oblivion

2. DESCRIBE THE SCHOOL BOY’S ATTITUDE
TOWARDS SCHOOL. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT
THESE PICTURES OF CHILDHOOD?

 The school boy whines for he is unwilling

to go to school. It feels normal because
some students does not like the feeling of
going to school. This is common especially
for children that are first timers on going
to school.
3. WHAT IS COMPARED TO THE “STAGE” IN THE
FIRST TWO LINES? HOW ARE THE TWO
RELATED?

 The stage means the life of the

person. The men and women are the
actors who are to play different roles
in life.
4. IN LINES 13 & 14, WHAT IS COMPARED
TO “REPUTATION”?

 The word “reputation” is being compared

to a person’s ego or will for people to look
up on him. He has this pride in which he
wants to have power among his fellow
men. We can see in the poem that we are
sometimes soldiers fighting for our own
personal battles.
FUN FACT!
 Bubble reputation- "Bubble" signifies the idea of
transience(the state or fact of lasting only for a
short time) and impermanence. The “reputation,”
for which a young man is eager to venture his
life, is actually bubble-like; implying that it’s not
going to last long.
METAPHORS
 A Metaphor is a figure of speech that makes an
implicit, implied, or hidden comparison between
two things that are unrelated, but which share
some common characteristics. In other words, a
resemblance of two contradictory or different
objects is made based on a single or some
common characteristics.

 Example:
“Words are daggers when spoken in anger”
SIMILE
 A simile is a figure of speech that makes a
comparison, showing similarities between two
different things. Unlike a metaphor, a simile
draws resemblance with the help of the words
“like” or “as.” Therefore, it is a direct comparison.

 Examples:
Her cheeks are red like a rose
He is as funny as a monkey.
5. WHAT OTHER COMPARISONS ARE USED IN
THE POEM? WHICH ARE EXAMPLES OR
METAPHOR? WHICH ARE EXAMPLES OF SIMILE?

SIMILE METAPHOR

EX: Creeping like a snail EX. All the world's a stage

6. ACCORDING TO THE SPEAKER OR “PERSONA” IN THE POEM,
WHAT PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHANGES TAKE PLACE AS A MAN
REACHES THE SIXTH AND SEVENTH AGE?

 He turns into a lean and slippered pantaloon.

 His shrunk shank and his big manly voice turns
again towards childish treble, pipes and whistle
in his sound.
FUN FACT
 Shrunk shank means describing a character who
in his old age, his body had become smaller and
his clothes fit him much bigger.
AND ANOTHER FUN FACT
 The video in the next slide will show an example
on what the phrase “childish treble, pipes and
whistle in his sound.”

 The video is named:

“Family Guy Herbert You Shall Not Pass.mp4”

FAMILY GUY HERBERT YOU SHALL NOT
PASS.MP4
7. DO YOU AGREE WITH THE PERSONA’S
DESCRIPTION OF OLD AGE? WHY?

 Yes,it is common for old people to

experience these types of emotional and
physical changes because insecurities will
be at a high range by this age. It is also
the part of how life works we get weaker
and older and our physical form must also
adapt to this change.
8. WHAT OTHER ACCEPTABLE DESCRIPTIONS OF
OLD AGE CAN YOU THINK OF?
9. IN THE LAST LINE OF THE POEM, THE WORD
SANS IS REPEATED. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS
THE PURPOSE OF REPEATING IT FOUR TIMES?
 It tells us that we are of hold of nothing once we
leave life to face death. When we die, we lose
everything, no matter how rich we are when we
are still alive. Everything’s gone.

 Repeating this word adds more feelings and

drama to the poem.
 Repitition is a central part of poetry
that adds to the enjoyment of a
poem. Words, phrases, or lines are
repeated to serve a purpose. Poets
often make sure that their words
stay in the reader’s mind.
10. DOES IT HELP IN UNDERSTANDING OF T
HIS POEM’S MEANING? FIND OTHER EXAMPLES
OF REPITITION IN THE POEM. LIST THEM.

 Yes!

1. SANS
2. AGE
3. HIS
11. WHAT EFFECT DOES THE REPETITION HAVE
ON THE DESCRIPTION OF THE LAST STAGE OF
MAN?

 Repetition of the description of the stage of a man

somehow tries to describe the sad reality of a
man's life when he reaches his last stage because
one way or another he is going to experience his
depleted senses.
FUN FACTS!
 Second Childishness is basically old age. Old
people during the time they are old act like small
children. They tend to forget things and do not
know what is happening.

 Mere Oblivion means that the old person is really

helpless and has just forgotten everything.

 SANS means WITHOUT
